Bug Description

I'd prefer to see my displayname/realname as defined in "About Me" instead of my user account name. Maybe it should be a preference, although indicator applet in 9.10 has no preferences so maybe that is not a good idea. Dunno.

Me too, indicator-applet-session in Karmic has no Preferences option at all.... very bad.

confirm. what has happened to the applet? Why did the preferences has gone?

Alkis Georgopoulos (alkisg) wrote :

It's a different applet, that's why it doesn't have the preferences button yet.

I'd also like to confirm the problem, and report that it's really valuable to have a preference for displaying the real name like it was by default in the old applet.

E.g. in my classroom I name the user accounts "classA" etc, but the real names do show the real names of the students, so I can see them when I'm over their computers. Seeing the username instead of the realname is useless to me.

I also confirm this problem.

I concur with Alkis Georgopoulos.

Not only would I like to have the choice Real Name/Username, but also the more general "users" or the little icon there was in the other applet.
Reason for this is I regularly take screenshots for educational purposes which might be useful outside my own classes or school: neither my real nor my username should be on them. In private life I spend a fair amount of time on the Dutch Ubuntu-nl forum where I'm known by my nickname...

I agree this might be nice. I don't think its on our current priority todo list for lucid, so I'm triaging this as wishlist.

I don't know if a preferences option, or just changing it would be better.

Hopefully Ted or David can chime in here ;)

Changed in indicator-applet:
status: New → Triaged
importance: Undecided → Wishlist

Putting this in context.

This seems like a dupe for bug #420186 but as this is marked as fix released and that one as wishlist i'll let them apart for the time being.

However is important to note this thread

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MeMenu#Changes%20to%20About%20Me

so this eventually would get completely solved.

affects: indicator-applet → indicator-me

This is fixed now isn't it? Can we close this?

I agree too. My students asked me is it possible?

To remove the name;

gconftool -s /system/indicator/me/display –type int 0

To use your name;

gconftool -s /system/indicator/me/display –type int 2

To use the default one;

gconftool -s /system/indicator/me/display –type int 1

Bug solved.

Still missing something:

tv@katran:~$ gconftool -s /system/indicator/me/display -–type int 0
Error while parsing options: Unknown option -–type.

If these options are available, why aren't they in a gconf schema somewhere?
