configure fails to notice missing g++

Bug Description

When compiling on linux, using 0.5.2 release, configure completes, but make fails, if g++ is not present on system.

NOTE: gcc is present.

This is an autoconf bug, see http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/autoconf/2006-03/msg00067.html

Fixed in revision 1515 (0.5-main tree) and 1552 (0.6-main tree).
