snowball UI doesn't return after screen blank

When I let the system simply idle until the screen blanks, I move the mouse or press keys on the keyboard but nothing returns. Serial console is still active, but nothing that I can find in dmesg that seems to correspond to.

I also encountered this problem on snowball.

Used dd tool to flash sd image to sdcard and insert it in snowball.
