This *might* be a book in the middle of being stitched, but I still don't know what the issue with this book is. Any advice?

Permission denied likely indicates the book has incorrect ownership or ownership set. You can investigate by looking at the directory or files in the directory with ls -l, or you could just run a sweep of:

sudo chown -R www-data:scribe /0/items/*
