Bug Description

the i8k driver and i8kutils on:
Linux - Mint - 16 - petra.
HWR: Dell Precision 380 Workstation.
The sensors native app sees the Fan-Speed sensor, But
The CPU Temperature sensor is not visible to the i8kutils or sensor app or any other utilities which access the hardware sensors.
So far, on the computer mentioned above I can access the GPU-Graphics Card Temperature Sensor, and the Dell CPU Fan-Speed sensor.

Could you please contextualize the fact the CPU temperature sensor is not visible with the utilities from i8kutils? A post with the result of '$ cat /proc/i8k' may help.

I just noticed this same problem as well. I had been running i8kmon / i8kutils for years on my Dell Vostro 3560 without problems. I'm on Archlinux, kernel version was recently updated to 3.16.1.

I believe the problem is that 'i8kctl temp' reports 0, which is obviously incorrect.

/proc/i8k:
1.0 A15 C2LKHV1 0 -22 0 -22 0 -1 -22

Running 'sensors' reports:

coretemp-isa-0000
Adapter: ISA adapter
Physical id 0: +57.0°C (high = +87.0°C, crit = +105.0°C)
Core 0: +53.0°C (high = +87.0°C, crit = +105.0°C)
Core 1: +53.0°C (high = +87.0°C, crit = +105.0°C)

i8k-virtual-0
Adapter: Virtual device
Right Fan: 0 RPM
CPU: +0.0°C

The danger is of course that the fan will never kick in, since it believes the temperature is zero.

Hi,

You mean M3800, not 380 ? If yes, I have a Dell Precision M3800 to and I have no problem with the reported temperature :

coretemp-isa-0000
Adapter: ISA adapter
Physical id 0: +38.0°C (high = +84.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 0: +37.0°C (high = +84.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 1: +35.0°C (high = +84.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 2: +37.0°C (high = +84.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 3: +34.0°C (high = +84.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)

i8k-virtual-0
Adapter: Virtual device
Right Fan: 2400 RPM
CPU: +38.0°C

I use the last vitorafsr's version from the ppa. But they are other problems with i8k and this machine. The fact that they's only one fan detected and micro freezes, here :
