Bug Description

Unless somebody is using the arrow keys from the numpad as part of their password... (Which is not possible) then this should not be a warning. This warning should be reserved solely for Caps Lock.

steps to reproduce
let your monitor go to sleep
when you see the password box to unlock it, there will be an exclamation point and warning about Num Lock

do some updates
when you see the password box, the same applies

This is a really worthless warning, and it makes me paranoid about my caps lock key. Does anyone else agree we should be rid of this so as not to confuse people?

The warning is for people with laptops that dont have a seperate number pad but can enable num lock and use there letter keys as the num pad. Unless some how it can be detected that the user has a separate num pad this warning is valid.

There is a reasonable way to cut down on the number of people who see this bug, which it really is if they have a separate num pad. Check if there is a battery, if it's a portable device, the odds are significantly in favor of the num pad being integrated into the main key section. But, another idea might be to disable the num lock at all times when entering a password? Heavily numeric passwords are not very strong, so this would discourage that practice, and it would allow all of us not to suffer the warning.

Yes, this is annoying me as well.

I think the best solution would to be to have a preference somewhere to enable/disable showing this warning (as well as the caps lock warning) and have it enabled by default for laptops and disabled by default for desktops.

I may look into finding what packages this would need to be fixed in.

We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to review all reported bugs in a timely manner. You reported this bug some time ago and there have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time. This issue should also have been reported against an Ubuntu package.

Does anyone still see this as a problem in a currently supported release of Ubuntu?
