With all the changes going on in Ubuntu and new people coming in it really is time to update the default bookmarks.

This seem like a good list that include solutions for common problems that people have on a first time install.

Tom Pino, Could you click the status NEW and change it to confirmed. Thanks.

I got some links wrong so I've edited the links.

Lose these: -- the installer should be self expanatory. Otherwise it's failing in it's function. -- third party with ads. Looks fugly and isn't official in any way -- there are themes in the repos. We have the shiny new Ubuntu Software Center. Let's use it -- this is for Kubuntu. AFAIK Firefox isn't the default in Kubuntu and the above also applies -- third party and the major use scenarios are taken care of by the codec installer. Any potential problem with codecs should be dealt there -- same as above -- third party aka not official. Such things should be done on the * domain.

I do think that would be a good addition to the default bookmarks, but I'm not sure how necessary it would be when we already have a bookmark that (indirectly) links to, where the Support section is already quite discoverable

Why on earth cant there be a link to on the default firefox bookmarks toolbar.

Also why is the size of the browser so small width wise. Bizarre.

I second this, UF is a great support resource. Also freenode webchat:

Hi there.

It would definitely be worth it to include a link to UbuntuForums.

Anyone else think that it's strange that in the installer there are all references to, but in the initial install, the firefox bookmarks point to

Speaking of 10.04 by the way, not 10.10.

Many other distros do this, why not Ubuntu?

+1 on this. Ubuntu aims to be newbie-friendly, right?

So, why don’t we promote some other free & open projects there that are useful and not related to Ubuntu?
I’ve been gathering some of them at (once it’s running)

And maybe also some non-digital:

When they already have Ubuntu, we should help them dive deeper into free culture. I know it took long for me to get to know all these massively useful sites.

On the current bookmarks:
Why and not just call it like it is everywhere else?
Launchpad answers should definitely stay! The direct connection to everything else (including frequently asked questions) makes it much easier to operate than a forum.
I’m not entirely sure on Debian. If that is there, GNOME should be too. On the other hand, it is not useful for most.

Agreed that this could be updated, but as zekopeko mentions no need to promote private blogs.

To add to the list, can also be included.

Yes, we should definitely get this one into the bookmarks. But what
else? Can someone please decide the proper list so that a developer can
make the change?

What about this selection? Some about Ubuntu + problem solving but also some more general: (localized forum, for example for Germany) (localized, if available) (localized version)

They should be visibly placed in the bookmarks toolbar.

I would love to see ubuntuforums added to the default bookmarks in Firefox.

Can we make some progress on this one?

philinux (philcb) wrote :

Ok here's a patch. I've used the livecd to add and to the default bookmarks under the folder "Ubuntu and Free Software links". I've then exported this to a html file which is attached.

This belongs in the archive /usr/lib/firefox-11.0/omni.ja thanks.

summary: - Maverick: The defaut livecd and installed firefox bookmarks could do
- with updating.
+ The defaut firefox bookmarks could do with updating.

Am I wasting my time with this?

How about adding something like or as well.
I think is very useful, because it explains how to get the DVD player functioning. Just downloading the codecs wont make libdvdcss4 work.

Chris Wilson (notgary) wrote :

I'm going to downgrade the firefox (Ubuntu) task from triaged to confirmed until we can get a decision on what the new bookmarks should be. There have been a number of suggestions made already, including ubuntuformums and askubuntu, but I think we need someone to say 'These are the ones we want to include'.

Changed in firefox (Ubuntu):
status: Triaged → Confirmed
Changed in hundredpapercuts:
milestone: none → quantal-9-internet

Having and would be great!
