Bug Description

The Notification Area applet displays the wireless network indicator, language input indicator, and icons of various programs you have running in the background. In Lucid, the Indicator Applet displays the Battery indicator, sound indicator, and message indicator (for Empathy, Evolution, Gwibber).

I feel very strongly that the fact that the wireless and langauge bar indicators are in the Notification area and not in the Indicator applet, makes both applets perform a dual duty; they both display indicators, but different ones. They should not do the same job: either one applet displays all indicators (battery, sound, wireless, messaging, language, etc, all of them), and the other displays background running programs, or there should be one single applet for both jobs.

As it stands, it is confusing and unintuitive.

Indeed, the notification area applet is being phased out in favour of the indicator applet. Unfortunately, NetworkManager has not been patched to use the new technology, because it generates quite complex menus. Hopefully that will be ready for Ubuntu 10.10.

I'm marking this invalid as it is not a papercut, but a major design discussion. Feel free to bring it up on a mailing list (probably ayatana or devel-discuss) if you still feel strongly about the situation: https://lists.ubuntu.com/ … probably https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/Ubuntu-devel-discuss , more specifically.

Thanks for your interest! Don't worry, I think we all have similar feelings about the current transitional state.

This is actually a dup of Bug #518523 and as Dylan mentions not a simple task ;-)
