Update manager pops up in the screen instead of appearing in notification area

One Hundred Papercuts

Bug Description

Whenever there's a new update for Ubuntu, the update manager quickly pops up in the screen, then is minimized, then keeps flashing in the task bar. No notification icon appears, neither the small unobtrusive yellow dialog that said I had updates to deal with.

Steps to reproduce:
- Wait until an update is released
- Notice the window quickly opening, then minimizing, then the taskbar button flashing

What should have happened ?
A small bright orange icon should have appeared in the notification area, so that I could lazily decide when to update my system.

Important notice: I don't need any pop up jumping on my screen, I could have bought another OS for that. ;-)

This is a papercut. This probably is the same bug as #332945, but I'm too lazy to read the whole book that the bug has become.

this seems a regression from previous version of Ubuntu.

It should be nicely integrated into the new notification applet but this doesnt seem to be the case

Thanks for the report, but as you suggest this is indeed a dupe of bug 332945, so I'll mark it as such. It does happen to have a hundredpapercuts task as well.

This has been a design decision by the Design team/Ayatana team...

As you already know that it is a dupe, it is not very useful to overwork the devs by just creating dupes...

If you have a good suggestion of an *alternative* behavior for the update manager , the devs are open to suggestion at: https://launchpad.net/~ayatana
