Bug Description

The "info" package that is preinstalled on Ubuntu Focal ships with a "info.desktop" file that adds a "TeXInfo" desktop launcher displayed among other apps. The launcher opens a terminal application that is confusing and user unfriendly for many users. Users that actually want to use info can do it using a terminal. Please, consider removing the desktop file or at least set it to not show among other apps.

Adding "NotShowIn=GNOME;" (without quotes) to /usr/share/applications/info.desktop could be sufficient.

Maybe GNOME should just hide all Terminal=true apps in a folder called "Terminal applications" or something? Debian is adding more and more of these, and it's annoying.

This is how all the preinstalled apps look like on a clean, minimal Ubuntu 20.04 installation.

It probably won't be fixed by the Debian package maintainer so this needs to be patched in Ubuntu (for example by adding the line from comment #2).

Seems like it would better if Debian reverted that change but meanwhile that will resolve the issue in our default sessions

If Ubuntu think that this is the correct way, fine with me. But Gnome3
is not the only Desktop, and some users *might* want interesting stuff,
too. So I leave this to the Ubuntu maintainers.

(Debian maintainer here)

@Norbert, it's not the ideal solution no, those .desktop are not really good desktop applications and ideally they would be dropped in Debian&Ubuntu, meanwhile I don't want to add a delta to texinfo in Ubuntu so that will do the trick

What do you do on the Ubuntu side with say
 julia.desktop
which starts a julia shell?
Similarly: ocaml, R, SageMath, ... there are quite a lot of applications
with Terminal=true?

Hide all of them in Gnome?
