Bug Description

I'm running Ubuntu Gnome 16.04 on a Thinkpad T440p. On upgrading to 4.4.0-43 and rebooting the system didn't seem to recognize my Wifi or sound hardware: there was no Wifi icon or ability to connect to a network, and the only output on the sound menu was "Dummy Output." Rebooting into 4.4.0-42 solved the issue.

Matti Laakso (matti-laakso) wrote : Re: Wifi, sound not detected when booting on 4.4.0-43

Caused by missing linux-image-extra-4.4.0-43, which was not upgraded together with the base kernel package.

I've also been hit by this critical bug on my Thinkpad T550 (intel graphic card). The symptom was that I had a very low resolution on boot ; Xorg logs showed it was using vesa ! Then I installed the package linux-image-extra-4.4.0-43-generic and everything went back to normal.

Similar symptoms on Acer Aspire E5-521 - no touchpad or USB mouse, no wifi, only generic graphics driver. Reverting to 4.4.0-42-generic is effective as a workaround.

Fix suggested by Matti Laakso (comment #17) restores all but wifi:

apt install linux-image-extra-4.4.0-43

Running "dkms status" shows that the Broadcom Wifi driver (bcmwl) failed to build for 4.4.0-43-generic. To fix this as well:

apt install linux-headers-4.4.0-43-generic

Driver should build (for 4.4.0-43-generic) and function normally again on reboot.
