Bug Description

My perfectly working mouse, fails to function in any way after login to gnome's desktop environment. Mouse works perfectly in the login screen, only after I enter my password and press enter the mouse freezes after a few seconds. I am certain this is a bug as I installed LXQt desktop environment and logged into that with no problems.

Additional Info: I installed Ubuntu, directly using the Ubuntu-Gnome ISO.
default installed version of GNOME is 3.18

One more thing!! When I disconnect and re-connect my mouse, it seems to function for a little less than a second, then it freezes again. Just thought you should know.

I have encountered another user with this bug. It seems to be related to Nvidia Proprietary drivers as well.

This is definitvely related to the nvidia drivers and gnome 3.18+, at least in my case. Disabled nvidia drivers and gnome3 works great. See here for more detail:

I upgraded from 14.04 to 16.04 today.
Mouse is working fine at the point logins are displayed.

Using Unity login, the mouse works for a few seconds after entering password, then freezes before launcher appears and ceases to work until reboot.

After reading replies in the askubuntu question above, I have installed gnome-session-flashback and rebooted. Now I have three desktop choices for login.

Ubuntu: freezes as before
Gnome Flashback Compiz: freezes in the same manner.
Gnome Flashback Metacity: is working.

My Video hardware shows as NVIDIA Corporation C61 [GeForce 7025 / nforce 630a] in Software & Installed driver is xserver-xorg-video-nouveau.

I thought I would try installing the nvidia 304 proprietary driver.
This changed behaviour
unity : freeze
flashback metacity : freeze
flashback compiz : working

As there were other issues with the driver (the login text size very large) I decided to revert to nouveau
Unfortunately after reverting all three froze, only keyboard input capability at this point.

I have now installed xfce4 and fortunately it works, I have a functioning gui desktop.

This upgrade has turned out to be a bit of a disaster.

Investigating a cursor freeze problem in the new Software application, I found the following bug:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-software/+bug/1578317

Comment #8 suggested that the login cursor freeze could be avoided by removing gnome-software-service.desktop from autostart by renaming the entry in /etc/xdg/autostart

I have done this and now my unity and gnome-flashback logons are all logging in successfully.

On my system this bug appears to be a gnome-software bug.

Confirmed that renaming /etc/xdg/autostart/gnome-software-service.desktop worked around this issue for me (nvidia GeForce GTX 640) with no noticeable consequences.

As a side note, I also experienced a similar issue after installing 16.04, 16.04.1 and 15.10 with same tasksel selections on this same hardware but did not experience the issue when installing 14.10. All installs were from either CD (via mini iso) or DVD (desktop distro).

Neglected to mention that the entire system appears to freeze when I hit this as keyboard (ps2) ceases to function as well.
