synaptics refuses to run after upgrade to Xenial from Wily

I believe this is the same bug I have encountered. A workaround is described at https://superuser.com/a/575754/641073
(fix the DefaultDistro setting in /root/.synaptic/synaptic.conf)

Ubuntu 16.04 (xenial) reached end-of-life on April 29, 2021.
Ubuntu 15.10 (wily) reached end-of-life on July 28, 2016.

Does this bug report have any relevance now that both of the releases it refers to are now 'End of Life'?
