Hugin crashes upon selecting images

Bug Description

I installed Hugin on my Windows 7 Professional 64-bit desktop with HuginSetup_2013.0.0_64bit_Windows.exe, and started Hugin. I pressed the Load Images... button (within the Assistant tab). I proceeded to select some images and pressed the Open button. Hugin then crashed; that is, Windows 7 then displayed "hugin.exe has stopped working".

This problem is repeatable. Every time I start Hugin and try to select one or more images as above, it crashes.

A few weeks ago, I had experienced the identical problem with version 2012.0.0 of Hugin on my Windows 8 64-bit laptop, but had written it off as a "Windows 8 thing". I have successfully used previous versions of Hugin on other computers.

One additional point ... I have not yet turned off tool tips, so I must naturally close the tool tip box before attempting to load the image(s).

I can't reproduce the issue with my images. I can load my images without problem with the 64 bit version on Window 7. So there must be something "special" with your images

What images do you use? TIFF or jpeg? From which source? Edited with software?
Can you provide a link to a sample image, so I could try if I can reproduce the crash.

PS: We don't do the beta/release candidate cycle for fun. It takes some time to handle that cycle. So we encourage users to report bugs before the final version is released. Now after the release we can't fix the issue so fast and you have to wait for the next release.

I was using JPEGs, all straight from the camera; that is, not edited. As requested, you can find such an image at http://dawe.homeip.net/pano-problem.jpg.

Meanwhile, I do not think there is anything special with my images. For example, I just tried an older image and the 2013.0.0 Hugin still crashed. This was an image that I had successfully used to create a panorama with the then-available version of Hugin (2009.4.0, I think).

Hmm ... I guess the timing of this bug report is not ideal. However, when I looked for a recent version of Hugin about a month or so ago, I do not recall seeing evidence of a recent (for example, beta) version of the software. I expect that I would have tried it out.

On a separate note, I tried the images in different locations, on a NAS share as well as on the Windows desktop. Same results.

I have some more information. I have now tried a variety of versions (on the same Windows 7 64-bit desktop system). Using the 32-bit installers, the most recent version that works for me is 2011.0. Version 2011.2 and later do not work for me.

Also ... I forgot about this ... I do not need to try to load images to get the crash. I can also get Hugin to crash just by trying to close it. But, of course, this is not a problem with Version 011.0 and earlier.

Based on my testing on the Windows 7 desktop, I was expecting that Version 2011.0 would work on my Windows 8 64-bit laptop. It turns out that it does not. However, the problem with Version 2011.0 (specifically on the laptop) is different, and may be unrelated ... in this case selecting an image causes Hugin to hang, rather than crash.

So I tried Version 2010.4 on the laptop. It works fine.

Hello,
I'm experiencing the same problems as David.
Have installed the 64 bit version of Hugin on Windows 7 Home Premium
The program crashes when I try to upload photos.
It crashes too by just a start - quit.
I have not tested older versions of Hugin on this computer (where can I find older versions ?)

Thanks for more details.
But I can not reproduce the crash with the released 64-bit version and your image.
It works without any problems. So the issue is not the image and not the release version.
So there is something special with your configuration.

Maybe updating the graphic card driver could help, but I have only little hope.

Happens with me too. Didn't happen with the last version. Only since I installed 2013.0.0. Happens immediately when I load photos in. Windows 7.

I also have the same thing happening on Vista/7. And my guess would be additional requirements is not right. Does Hugin use anything different from 2011.2 ? Maybe some windows redistributables, or some small dll is missing?

Also, i can verify, that this crashing of newer versions started whem preview part was added on first tab. I also had crashes on older versions, when after sthiching preview was shown. can this preview part be turned off in 2013 version?

If a dll were missing, it would complain at start, because the dll are not dynamically loaded.

Could you please check (just we are talking from the same thing), because I can't reproduce the issue here.
1.) Check the preferences: on the Assistant tab check that "Automatically align images after loading" is switched off (only for the tests).
2.) Now try loading images from the fast preview window, tab assistant: use the button "1. Load images" -> is it crashing here?
3.) Try loading images from the panorama editor: select "View > Panorama editor" and then "Edit > Add images" > is it crashing here?

(assuming you are using the standard user interface)

PS The preview can be disabled when starting Hugin with pressed ctrl key.

Switched off

2.) Now try loading images from the fast preview window, tab assistant: use the button "1. Load images" -> is it crashing here? Yes

3.) Try loading images from the panorama editor: select "View > Panorama editor" and then "Edit > Add images" > is it crashing here? Crashed again

(assuming you are using the standard user interface)

PS The preview can be disabled when starting Hugin with pressed ctrl key.

I suspect that the problem is still outstanding, though I have not tried any recent releases since originally reporting the problem. My work-around has been to keep using the older Hugin software.

I am hoping to re-visit the problem in a few weeks. When that time comes, would it be possible to try a test build that might have some logging or other diagnostic helpers enabled? But before that, I will have a closer look at your previous post.

In response to tmodes post of 2014-01-08:

I have once again installed a recent Hugin on my Windows 7 Professional 64-bit desktop, using HuginSetup_2013.0.0_64bit_Windows.exe. Under Device Manager, the Display Adapter is identified as Intel graphics ("Intel(R) G41 Express Chipset").

I am running Hugin with Interface set to Simple.

Here is what I did:

- File - Preferences - Assistant:
   - Verified that "Automatically align images after loading" was unchecked.
- Within the Assistant tab:
  - Load images... - select one or more images - (crash)
- View - Panorama editor:
  - Edit - Add Image - select one or more images - (crash)
- Started Hugin with the Ctrl key pressed:
  - Disabled the OpenGL preview
  - Edit - Add Image - select one or more images - (works okay)
