Yeah I just setup 13.10 for someone and after solving the HUD won't show up for 30 second bug, it seemed to work great and searched online sources and everything. That was friday. Today, on sunday I came back to their house and see that when the HUD shows up the little search circle spins constantly for a long time and nothing shows up. If I enter anything it spins again and still nothing. Now it's showing Firefox and GUfw Firewall in applications and a few files and folders below. I have it on the home button. Then if I go to applications or documents it does seem to work now. But if I go back to home it starts spinning again and the firefox and Gufw are there and no matter what. It stops spinning after a few seconds... Well all I can say is that it seems totally messed up and isn't working like it did on friday. It's slow and annoying now. I even turned off online search in the security settings (I thought maybe it's slow internet) but that hasn't changed anything.

I'm having the same problem with every single application under Ubuntu 13.10 64bit... Why is that these type of bugs, of essential functional get to the final release!
I'm so mad that Ubuntu decided to ditch the majority of its desktop user just so they can pursue a while dream of Ubuntu Touch... so frustrated!

After following the second part of this guide, I can say that HUD is working fine now. You just have to reset unity, the icons won't be reset, just size and behaivor. Here's the workaround:

After reset the unity according to #8 hud is working. But some application is not responding. Basically those application which move their menu into right side. As an example nautilus , document viewer etc. Google chrome has a bug that it doesn't show global menu. HUD is not working with google-chrome too. I am attaching some screenshots.

I have the same problem. HUD totally useless now. Since HUD is a critcal part of Unity this is really anoying. Please fix this asap!
I am using Ubuntu 13.10 64bit and Compiz rotating cube.

I have tried the Unity reset described above at Felipe, but it did not help.

While you are at it: is it possible to enhance the launcher buttons management? It would be great to be able to modify properties of buttons through right clicking on them. I would like to be able to change button properties like: icon file, full path of program launched, etc. Now I modify those properties by editting the .desktop files in ~/.local/share/applications/. Right clicking on a button would be so much easier!

But please fix HUD first.
