Subject: hplip: no way to clean cartridges on a server
Date: Tue, 27 Jul 2010 22:02:44 +0000
[Message part 1 (text/plain, inline)]
Package: hplip
Version: 3.10.6-1
Severity: wishlist

I have a server on my network that, among other things, runs a copy of
cups for my DeskJet 5740. This allows people on the network to print
over IPP. However, installing the hplip package brings in a huge number
of dependencies that simply are not appropriate for a server, such as
consolekit (since nobody is ever logged in at the console).

I have the printer set up fine with hplip-cups and a PPD. However, if I
temporarily install hplip (in order to run hp-clean or such), hp-clean
does not work, which I presume is due to not using the hp backend.

I'd prefer that you provide a way to maintain the printer on a server
without involving the installation of huge amounts of useless (and
potentially buggy) packages. It would be fine with me if I only needed
to install hplip on a desktop or laptop connected to the network, as
long as I didn't need to install it on the server. It would also be
fine with me if I could install the utilities and relevant backend on
the server without all the baggage[0] coming along.

The information below is irrelevant since it belongs to my laptop, not
my server.

[0] That is, policykit and libsane. This is a server with a printer,
not a desktop with an all-in-one.
