Bug Description

HPLIP version - 3.11.12, DMV - 15(Qt4), OS - Ubuntu 11.10, Linux Kernel 3.0.0-14-generic

This is a new bug report based on #906840. If you read the old #906840 thread (was 3.10.11), then the reason for this bug report should become apparent.

Anyway, as the summary suggests, printing on an HP Laserjet P1005 is really unreliable. On first install, printing seems to work fine. But after a while it just stops, and to get the printer working again, the printer has to be removed from Ubuntu's printer list, re-added and then a system restart is required.

I've added the last two hp-check.log files from the previous bug report (#906840).

NOTE - Hopefully, by starting this new bug report, Launchpad won't distribute to the person who objected to receiving the #906840 reports. I don't know if he's subscribed to Launchpad, whether a genuine mistake has occurred, but the shouty and confrontational responses I am getting are becoming stressful. If however, the problem persists whereby someone is getting emails when he/she doesn't want them, can someone please help me resolve the problem or just simply remove me from Launchpad and I'll try to resolve my problems elsewhere or simply buy a new printer that works with Ubuntu. I don't know why someone keeps shouting at me when all I am doing is requesting help and support on getting a printer working through Launchpad.

Thanks in advance

Hi,

Thanks for reporting the bug in HPLIP. To help us understand and analyze the issue please follow following things.

=> Download and install the latest HPLIP release from http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/index.html:
=> Reconfigure print queue with the commands mentioned below.
       =>system-config-printer (remove all print queues)
       =>hp-setup (for adding print queue)
=>Now try to print again. If issue still occurs then please do the following things to capture some logs.

    a)Open /etc/cups/cupsd.conf in root mode and replace

        LogLevel warn

          with

       LogLevel debug
       hpLogLevel 15

    b) Open Terminal and run following commands:
       => su
       => /etc/init.d/cups restart
                  or
       => service cups restart
       => cd /tmp
       => rm *.out
       => rm *.bmp
       => cat dev/null > /var/log/cups/error_log
       => hp-check -t > /tmp/hpcheck.log

    c) Try to print the file and then send
          => /var/log/syslog (if present),
          => /var/log/messages (if present),
          => /var/log/cups/error_log
          => /tmp/*.bmp
          => /tmp/*.out
          => /tmp/hpcheck.log
          => document used for printing

    d) Please let me know the application used for testing.

Okay Sanjay. I've waited until Ubuntu 12.04 LTS before proceeding with this error. In the meantime I have continually been having to install hplip and/or HP LaserJet P1005 printer in order to get files to work temporarily.

I have now downloaded HPLIP-3.12.4 and it's still the same. I have attached a zip file containing 3 of the files you requires. The rest were not present. The document used for printing is also attached in pdf format.

The application I'm using is Adobe Reader 9 - Version 9.5.1 03/07/2012

However, LibreOffice is proving just as unreliable at times for printing - although removing the printer from Ubuntu printer menu and reinstalling it, does get me over this temporarily.

Regards

Ian

PS - Some parts of the instructions above don't work for me. I apologise in advance if they didn't work due to misunderstanding etc. For instance:

Part b

1) rm *.out no such file or directory
2) rm *.bmp no such file or directory
3) /cat dev/null > /var/log/cups/error_log gave me a "permission denied" whether in root or not but I do have a cups error_log file attached in the zip

And when I try to print, the above are not created in /tmp directory either

Managed to get one print out of a schematic from web page on reinstalling printer:

1) Remove printer from Ubuntu printers, unplug usb, re-plug usb, let Ubuntu detect printer, printer successfully prints jpg from Firefox.

2) Then came to do another ---> flashing green light --> but no printout.

3) So repeat above; Remove printer from Ubuntu printers, unplug usb, re-plug usb, let Ubuntu detect printer. Flashing green light but this time no print, so remove queue and repeat.

4) Remove printer from Ubuntu printers, unplug usb, re-plug usb, let Ubuntu detect printer. Flashing green light but this time no print, so remove queue, and download firmware and plugin again and notice the HP dropdown menu is full of repeated lines again (i.e. 2 x Hp Device Manager, 2 x Settings etc). This time printer prints other schematic jpg from Firefox.

5) Try to print another jpg, this time it works.

6) Repeat 5 okay 5 times

Then it'll go back to not printing. Fed up really that I have to keep either removing the printer from Ubuntu Printers and reinstalling, or worse, download firmware and plugin everytime it stops.
