Hi Sanjay,
well, embarassing... it appears to work now... I also disabled debug
log and tried again, it worked again. I have no idea why :-)
I shall keep your instructions and whenever the problem occurs again,
I would use them to produce the log output.
Many thanks for your help anyway.

Hi,
From the logs it is clear that Duplex command is not sent (Duplex=None) to the printer.
[From error_log........]
argv[5]
Please select duplex option from the application also. If issue is still found then please let me know.

Hi *,
many thanks for your reply. The problem still persists. I am attaching
an OpenOffice document which shows all the settings.
Also, note that I have to delete and reinstall my printers about once
every week. I get "communication error" for no reason, but I can
reinstall the printers with no problem. I shall open a new bug for
that. I noticed that after doing this, OpenOffice no longer gave me an
option for Duplex printing (you can see that in one of the two
attached documents).
Note that printing from Windows and MAC OS works without problems,
including duplex. Also the communication error issue does not appear
on any other platform. Therefore, I assume that the printer hardware
as such is OK.
Your continued support will be appreciated. Thank you in advance.
HPLIP version is 3.11.12., Ubuntu is 11.04 and fully up to date.
With thanks / kind regards,
Georg

Hi,
After adding print queue, did you select the Installable options -> Duplexer to Installed. The same needs to be done in
http://
After above settings only the application will show the duplexer options. And as far as hp-toolbox is concerned, please select duplex option in hp-toolbox -> Select correct print queue on Left side pane -> Printer Settings -> General
Thanks,
Sanjay

Hi *,
I found one thing was weird. In OpenOffice, I could set the duplex
setting as expected, but then I closed the properties dialog, and
opened it again, and the duplex selection I had made previously was
gone. I am attaching a document that shows the steps that I did.
I hope this helps us find the problem.

Further to previous e-mail, I did another test. Using DocumentViewer
2.32.0, I tried to print a PDF file. But the dialog does not allow me
to select double sided printing. Please see the screen shot attached.
Selecting an "auto duplex" paper format does not solve the problem,
either.
hope this helps.

Hi,
Please run "hp-toolbox" command in the terminal and print the pdf file (.odt file cant be printed from here) with duplex option (you can set it in printer settings-> general tab). Please let me know if it prints duplex job now.
Please send me /var/log/
1) when printed from hp-toolbox
2) when printed from application
Thanks,
Sanjay

Hi,
printing from hp toolbox worked double sided with pdf file. Inside
application, the two sided option is greyed out.
Please find attached:
1. CUPS error logs (I tried 2 documents, both worked from hp toolbox)
2. The second document I printed (the first one contains personal data
so I cant send it)
3. The screen shot showing the application print dialog with double
sided greyed out.
I hope this helps. As a temporary workaround, I would use the export
to PDF functionality of OpenOffice, and use the hp toolbox for printing.

Hi,
Duplex printing with OpenOffice has some issues with application itself. If you are tying to print from the Document viewer. Do certain changes in the cups web server (http://
1. Open the cups web server in the browser by typing in the URL http://
2.Click on the printers tab and click on the printer queue (i.e * pro 8600)
3.Click on "Administration" tab and select the "Set Default Option" and click on it. There open another UI.
4.Click on the "Options installed" tab and select the "Installed" check box and click on the "set defaults option" button at the below.
5. Again open up the print queue select the "Adminitration" and click "Set Defaults Option" and click on the "General" tab and select the Media Size as "Latter AutoDuplex" / "A4 AutoDuplex" and Select the duplex option as "Long Edge / Short Edge" and click on the "set defaults option" button at the below.
Now open the PDF doc from the document viewer and click the print option and in the print dialogue general tab select two sided printing as "Long Edge/Short Edge" and Page Size to be "Letter AutoDuplex (or) A4 AutoDuplex and click on Print.
Let us know on the same.
Thanks,

HI,
many thanks for this update.
First, using settings below, it worked in Adobe Acrobat Reader. But it
does not work for OpenOffice and it does not work for Document viewer,
either. Document viewer does not offer me the double sided option.
Open Office does offer it, but the printout is still single sided.
The document viewer has a "two sided" option in the "page setup" tab.
But I can only select "one sided". It does not give me any other option.
Does it mean it is OpenOffce & Document viewer both have a bug with
resepect to double sided printing?
Since you state that OpenOffice (LibreOffice) has a bug with respect,
please kindly send me a reference (URL or bug identifier) so that I
can track that with openOffice.
thanks / regards,
Georg

I'm having the same issue under Ubuntu 12.04 with OpenOffice. No matter what I set, pages are not printed duplex. I triple-checked that the duplex option is selected.
What can be done to fix this issue?
Markus W (z-mw) wrote : | #23 |
To add to my comment #22, it appears the problem is specific to OpenOffice. Printing a PDF in duplex from hp-toolbox and from Document Viewer works just fine.
Vectorio (gprofos) wrote : | #24 |
I have the same problem, and reported it months back and nothing
appears to be happening.
As a workaround, I use the export as PDF feature of OpenOffice, then
open the PDF using adobe reader, which can print duplex OK.
hope this helps.

Same issue here, but only with LibreOffice. Other applications are printing fine on both sides.

I have the same issue with LibreOffice. Another workaround that worked for me is to print via PostScript: Print->

I have the same problem using hpcups 3.13.9
Changing Printer Language type from Automatic: PDF to Postscript (from driver) is my workaround. It seems to be a bug in OpenOffice /LibreOffice since quite a long time now. A shame.

Hi,
Thanks for reporting the bug in HPLIP. To help us understand and analyze the issue please do the following.
1) run "hp-toolbox -g" command in the terminal and then
a)Remove all the print queues if present, on pressing the minus (-) button. And then re-add the printer using Plus (+) button.
=> Please do the following to capture some logs.
a)Open /etc/cups/ cupsd.conf in root mode and replace
LogLevel warn
with
LogLevel debug
hpLogLevel 15
b) Open Terminal and run following commands:
or
=> su
=> /etc/init.d/cups restart
=> service cups restart
=> cd /tmp
=> rm *.out
=> rm *.bmp
=> hp-check -t > /tmp/hpcheck.log
c) Try to print the file and then send cups/error_ log
=> /var/log/syslog (if present),
=> /var/log/messages (if present),
=> /var/log/
=> /tmp/*.bmp
=> /tmp/*.out
=> /tmp/hpcheck.log
=> document used for printing
Thanks,
Sanjay
