It looks like that one of your ink cartridges is empty and this makes the printer refuse to print. Can you change the cartridge and see whether everything returns to normal?

Any one of the HPLIP developers at HP, can you do anything to make the situation more clear for users? For example if a cartridge is empty, the ink level check should still work so that the user clearly sees that a cartridge is empty. Also let the printer state reason for an empty supply being issued in such a case so that CUPS can report the problem to the user.

Changed in hplip (Ubuntu):

It may be (it's years since the load) --- but because it does not feel the lack of ink in the specific box

Note also that the ink cartridges have an expiration date. So the printer refuses to use them if they stay for a certain amount of years in the printer, even if they are not empty.
