Bug Description

1. Your Linux Distribution and version: Ubuntu 11.04
2. Your printer make/model.: HP Laserjet 1606dn
3. If possible, run 'hp-check -t' and post the output:

ciaran@ciaran-P5KC:~/Documents/computing/HP_P1606dn$ hp-check -t

HP Linux Imaging and Printing System (ver. 3.11.7)
Dependency/Version Check Utility ver. 14.3

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or
.run) to determine if the proper dependencies are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an
already built HPLIP supplied tarball has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode will check both of the above cases (both
compile- and run-time dependencies).

4. A detailed explanation of your problem: near the end of the installation after I have discovered the printer on the network (connected via ethernet) and I click next (which should download and install the HP-plugin) I get an error dialogue box which implies that I chose not to install the HP-plugin and it tells me that the printer performance will be poor (or something to that effect).
I did write previously reporting this problem when I had hplip-3.11.5 installed. (bug no 805632) and I got a response from Goutam Kodu who asked me to output the result from "hp-plugin -g". This I duly did and I got a prompt for me to accept the license conditions for the HP-Plugin and it was subsequently downloaded and installed.

I found that I needed to do the same thing again to get the install application to download the HP plugin.

I should state that in both cases it was a scratch install of Ubuntu 11.04

5. Steps to recreate the problem.
Just following normal installation instructions for hplip wizard.

Regards,
Ciaran Mulloy

Hi,

"hp-check -t" output shows that plug-in files are installed for this printer. I guess you are getting the error message during setting up the printer using "hp-setup" command.

We have a Ubuntu 11.04 system in our lab and we could not reproduce the same in here. I would require some debug messages for the same. To get that i need you to uninstall hplip and reinstall. This is very simple. If you have installed hplip-3.11.7 from hplip-3.11.7.run file downloaded from http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/gethplip.html. There would have created a source directory "hplip-3.11.7" at the same location where "hplip-3.11.7.run" file is saved.

Open the terminal and enter into directory "hplip-3.11.7" . When you are inside the source directory "hplip-3.11.7", run command "sudo make uninstall"

Next, run commands being in the same directory from terminal

$ ./configure --prefix=/usr

$ make

$ sudo make install

Delete any print queues created in "system-config-printer"

Next, run command "hp-setup -g" in terminal and post/attach me the output of this command.

Thanks & Regards,
Goutam Kodu

Download latest hplip-3.11.10 from http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/index.html and install it using "sh hplip-3.11.10.run" in commandline. Remove the existing print queues. Connect the printer via USB and run "hp-setup in commandline. It will ask to download a plugin file and install. After setup is done, you can print.
