Bug Description

Hi. I installed a new HP LaserJet Professional M1212nf MFP using hp-setup and downloading the required plugin. Everything works OK but printing some PDF files, that are printed with very light characters. If the same file contains images (bitmap or vectorial), these are printed OK. If the same file is printed as image, it is printed OK, but with lower quality because conversion.

Hi, thanks for your reply. I think this is not the same issue, becouse
M1212nf is laser and is printing the black graphics in black. The
black text is printed very light (about grey 3%). I can't check hpijs
or foo2xx becouse this printer need privative plugins.
Maybe Jonathan can test with my example file...

OK. I removed the debian packages and installed through installer. After that, printing doen't work any more (but yes scanning). Then, I copied /usr/lib/cups/filter/foomatic-rip to /usr/lib/cups/filter/foomatic-rip-hplip and printing is working again, with black characteres. Thanks!
So, with this version printing seems to be working well, but there is an error in the installer (where is foomatic-rip-hplip?).

I will report the bug to debian.

Hi Facu,

It looks like configuration of HPLIP in debian unstable is going wrong. By Default hpcups should get install but it is installing hpijs.

I can propose you the following solution:

When you run this command in the terminal,
$ sh hplip-3.11.3a.run

A folder "hplip-3.11.3a" gets created in the same location where hplip-3.11.3a.run is present.

Next follow the below instructions to configure hplip-3.11.3a.

$cd hplip-3.11.3a

$sudo make uninstall // this is to uninstall the hplip-3.11.3a

$./configure --with-hpppddir=/usr/share/ppd/HP --prefix=/usr --enable-udev-acl-rules --enable-qt4 --enable-doc-build --disable-cups-ppd-install --disable-foomatic-drv-install --disable-foomatic-ppd-install --disable-hpijs-install --disable-policykit
--enable-cups-drv-install --enable-hpcups-install --enable-network-build --enable-dbus-build --enable-scan-build --enable-fax-build

$make

$sudo make install

This will now install hplip-3.11.3a with hpcups enabled.

Please can you try the above instructions to configure hplip and let us know on the same.

Thanks and Regards,
Goutam

Yes, I thought that it was fine.

I followed your steps and now I installed hplip with hpcups without problems. But printing is working like before (with debian pakages), printing very light grey (unreadable) characters. So, I can confirm that this bug is similar to #689354 https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=689354, but I am printing in light grey only the text.

Hi Facu,

Thanks for that. I will work on it and check why it is happening in hpcups (printing grey). I dont have debian unstable distro to test this. I will check this on latest debian 6.0.1 and let you know on the same.

If the hplip-3.11.3a.run installer is configuring hpijs by default in debian unstable and foomatic-rip-hplip-install is not enabled then can you try this configuration by entering into the hplip source directory :
 $ ./configure --with-hpppddir=/usr/share/ppd/HP --prefix=/usr --enable-udev-acl-rules --enable-qt4 --enable-doc-build --disable-cups-ppd-install --enable-foomatic-drv-install --enable-foomatic-ppd-install --enable-foomatic-rip-hplip-install --enable-hpijs-install --disable-policykit --disable-cups-drv-install --disable-hpcups-install --enable-network-build --enable-dbus-build --enable-scan-build --enable-fax-build

and do

$ make
$sudo make install

Please can you let me know on the same and post me the output of "hp-check -t".

Thanks and Regards,
Goutam

Hi, I tested what you suggested, and that results in an install error:

# make install
(...)
test -z "/usr/lib/cups/filter" || /bin/mkdir -p "/usr/lib/cups/filter"
  /bin/bash ./libtool --mode=install /usr/bin/install -c hpps '/usr/lib/cups/filter'
/usr/bin/install -c hpps /usr/lib/cups/filter/hpps
test -z "/usr/lib/sane" || /bin/mkdir -p "/usr/lib/sane"
 /bin/bash ./libtool --mode=install /usr/bin/install -c libsane-hpaio.la '/usr/lib/sane'
libtool: install: error: cannot install `libsane-hpaio.la' to a directory not ending in /usr/lib64/sane
make[1]: *** [install-libsane_hpaioLTLIBRARIES] Error 1
make[1]: se sale del directorio `/home/facu/descargas/hard/impresoras/hplip/hplip-3.11.3a'
make: *** [install-am] Error 2
(...)

I added --libdir=/usr/lib64 option to configure, and make install runs without errors, but printing results in a lot of garbage printed (like a pdf source).

(sorry my poor english....)

Hi Facu ,

This garbage printing could be because the plugin might not have installed properly.

I want to share this little bit of information regarding the "foomatic-rip-hplip" .

@facu,
I have faced this issue only with your pdf sample (only the text is very light) and another pdf that I have (part of the graphics is very light). Otherwise, all my documents (pdf and others) print fine.

AFAIK, pdf's are pre-processed by ghostscript which outputs postsript files, which in turn are processed by hplip. It would be interesting to check whether the problem is with ghostscript or hplip. How can we have access to the intermediate postscript file?

It seems that this problem is solved in the new version 3.11.5 packaged in debian, like in https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=689354. Thanks!
