Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the
HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies
are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro
supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball
has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode
will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

Naga - in the first comment you say you have linked to answers to this bug - where is the link? The link is not visible to me.

Your workaround is for HPLIP 3.10.6. 3.10.2 is the current version in Kubuntu 10.04. Does the 3.10.6 plug in work for 3.10.2 also. If so where do I get the 3.10.6 plug in?

Thanks for helping.

sh hplip-3.10.2-plugin.run

Read all of the posts on the Related Questions" and they report the same problem and I didn't see any solution there either.

Ran wget and downloaded the pluin file. Then ran the shell command as you specified.

Got a segmentation fault and the reported failure to create a file under '~/.config/ibus/bus'

Found out that (K)Ubuntu does not install ibus by default and your plug in installation doesn't bother to check if it is install and install if not.

Installed ibus and ran your shell command again - same segmentation fault. Output follows:

sh hplip-3.10.2-plugin.run

I will do that ONLY if you cannot fix the bug in 3.10.2 which is the current version for Kubuntu 10.04.

I used to install all new versions of software when they came out. This practice got me totally out of step with the current version for a distribution. This made upgrading to new distribution upgrades a nightmare. A lot of my software was so out of step with the distribution that maintaining it was a real headache.

I no longer try to keep the latest releases for this reason. I stay with what is current for the current distribution software. That lets the distribution developers keep up with software releases and work out bugs with the distribution from one distribution upgrade to the next.

This bug has been in HPLIP for at least 2 upgrades of Kubuntu and I have posted about it previously on previous versions of Kubuntu and it has not been fixed.

So I have little to no confidence that my getting out of synch with the Kubuntu developers is going to buy me anything.

If you cannot fix it by 3.10.2, why should I believe that you have fixed it in 3.10.6?

I currently have 3 different HP printers and have stuck with HP printers because of the support received in the past. Please tell me that you are capable of fixing the bug for 3.10.2.

So it would seem that this bug which has been around for a few years and which I reported here a few years back, has still not been fixed.

So I downloaded the plug-in for 3.10.6 which you pointed to above and ran it.

Here is the output. Not sure if the plugin installed or not - can you tell???

Sorry for inconvenience caused due to this!!!

Plugin installation needs to run as root.
please run "sudo sh hplip-3.10.6-plugin.run"

This will do the required plug-in installation.
Once this has executed please check the exit status of command with "echo $?"

Thanks, for your report.
We will prompt to user to run hp-plugin as root.

Sorry for the comment #12.

If plug-in is not installed and running hp-setup:
hp-setup will launch hp-plugin to install plugin. and the invocation of hp-plugin by hp-setup is depends on weather policy-kit is enabled or disabled. if policy-kit is disabled then it will check for GUI tools in system to request to user to take username and password. if policy-kit is enabled then policy-kit should take care about it.
running hp-plugin as standalone will also work like the above.

This issue, Looks like there is an issue while invoking policy-kit from HPLIP, not from Ubuntu.

Thanks,
