Bug Description

Duplex support for the LJ Pro P1606dn still doesn't work properly in 3.10.6. I've configured the paper as "Letter AutoDuplex" (whoever invented different paper sizes for duplex??) and double-sided printing is set to "Long edge (standard)". When printing from Acrobat, the even pages are upside down (i.e., as if duplex were set to Short edge (flip)), and when printing a ps file with lpr, it's even worse, the even pages come out completely blank (paper goes through the duplex unit but half of the pages are not printed).

(It's not your fault but I'm really annoyed that HP advertises this model as "professional" and Linux-supported when really the hardware is a piece of junk and the driver doesn't work properly).

If it helps:

HPLIP 3.10.6 currently installed in '/usr/share/hplip'.

Same issue here.

It doesn't matter what paper or duplex options I pick (except none), I always get the "flip" duplex outcome instead of Long edge.

Same version of hplip. same printer.

Tried with gnome and kde.

Interesting fact: when using kde the printer ignores completly the options selected with hplip and uses the options selected in the printers section of system settings

running (K)Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit

Anna: I fixed my problem by giving up on hplip, and instead configuring
the printer as a Generic PCL5e compatible printer using the
"gutenprint-ijs-simplified" driver provided by foomatic. With this
generic driver the duplex feature works just fine for me, and I think
printing may even be slightly faster. (You might be losing on some of
the fancy resolution-enhancing features though -- I'm not sure).

Thanks a lot! Duplex printing now comes with the correct edge flipped,
and print quality is good and fast.

However: I just tried printing a 4-page document with the default
settings (all I changed from the default settings upon installing the
printer with hp-setup was to switch on the duplex option): it first
output a sheet with page 1 on top, page 2 underneath; then a sheet with
page 3 on top, page 4 underneath. Hence, the pages are sorted
incorrectly (the document is in order: 3,4,1,2). This is probably an
issue with face-up vs. face-down, or printing odd sides before/after
even sides. Still not ideal. (Can probably be fixed easily by tinkering
with the driver options).

Hi Denis,

As you mentioned the output printed pages are not in proper order. The printing order most follow in this manner (2,1,4,3,6,5...) which is still needs correction. We will be planing it to support it in the coming release.

Thanks,

I upgraded my hplip to version 3.10.9 and am still facing the same problem as mentioned originally: duplexing only works as short-edge, even when set to long-edge. Incorrect page order also applies. I am attaching the output from my hp-check.

Hello!

We are expereincing problems with duplex and short vs edge printing as well!

With latest hplip-3.11.3a we still get long-edge (tumble=false) no matter what we set via cups. We have tested through different applications as well as directly via cups lp command.

We are very interested in solving this issue! Can someone provide some more information where we could start digging into the code? It seems like a trivial bug...

Thanks!

Uros

Hi guys. I also have a HP P1606dn printer connected to openSuSE 11.4 (hplip 3.11.1a) and I just cannot manage to make the thing work properly. No option for duplex (two-sided) printing is shown, neither in any of the applications nor in the hplip manager. How did you manage to get duplex printing at all. Is anyone brave enough to share the secret with me :-)

Thanks,
Bojan

I can't do duplex whatsoever--the option is grayed out in the printer settings window. hp-check throws several errors, but I'm able to print single-sided things perfectly...so I'm not yet convinced that the two issues are correlated.

Hi! I was trying with different controllers and trying to fix unorder page printing. I get some solution, may be is not best, but is working.

I just reinstall hplip (uninstalling with same program old controler) and I install and detect my HP 1606dn like 2015dn, selecting another controller before finish install.

With this change, I was printing in normal way, I mean, sheet in order 1,2,3,4 (deselect in printing panel "Order Page")

I hope this can be usefull for you.

Take care.

Hi,
as I posted elsewhere (https://launchpad.net/~ospaly)

Our new printer HP LaserJet Pro P1606dn prints in incorrect order too (2 1 4 3 ...) with hplip 3.12.4 - I went through setup and didn't find anything what could cause this problem. (system CentOS 6.5).

So I don't think it was solved...
