Bug Description

Binary package hint: kubuntu-docs

Hi,

I'm translating the kubuntu-docs packages for the Lucid Lynx (10.04) release, and in the template "kubuntu-docs-printing" the "HP Device Manager" software is mentioned.

As this software is still in English and we do not know when it will be translated (see my question: https://answers.launchpad.net/hplip/+question/97690), all the commands concerning this software have been left in English, for the moment, and I left a little note inside string no. 16 (#37) to explain this choice.

Release version: Lucid Lynx
Package: kubuntu-docs-printing
Template address: https://translations.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/lucid/+source/kubuntu-docs/+pots/kubuntu-docs-printing

Regards,
Valter Mura

affects: kubuntu-docs (Ubuntu) → hplip (Ubuntu)

I had a look at the source code and there are translations done (.ts files) for de, es, it, fr, pt, ru and zh locale, but they are not used.

Following those bugs and questions (in Debian too)

it seems that upstream developers don't want to accept those translations.
cit. "We appreciate your offering to help, however we have a specific translation process we have to follow which doesn't allow for outside party translations."
That was three years ago and nothing happened since then.

Since there are also a patch available for Swedish language and other can be easily added, I think it should be nice to have a local branch set up for translating this application.
David, what do you think?

Btw, patches could also be sent to Debian, it would be great.

I found out another related question:
https://answers.edge.launchpad.net/hplip/+question/68843
I added this bug to it.

Anyway, the answer hasn't been so hopeful.

cit. "HPLIP has been localized in the past--however with the recent change to qt4 all of the dialogs need to be localized again. We are looking into the possibility of doing this in the future."

Another reason to think about a local branch.

The best would be if the upstream developers at HP fix this. Added upstream task...

@Till
I agree with you about that, but as I wrote on comment #1 and reported as answer on a related question, they doesn't allow for outside party translations and their plans to have it done started 3 years ago without news in the meantime.

HP has completely replaced the HPLIP developer team some months ago. So it is possible that perhaps the new team will take into account internationalization.

Would anyone want to contact the HPLIP team, either by filing a bug or through the answers system?

It looks to me that if there is a new developer team, this bug is just blocking on someone actively wanting to work on the fix and contacting them to see what the status is.

HPLIP is installed by default in OpenSUSE 11.4 but completely untranslated. A (German) localisation without hazzle would be nice as installing the printers is the first thing you do when you start your freshly installed operating system.

I tried to contact the team via Launchpad. Let's see if there is any reaction.

According to this question, at least German and French translations are available for the software:
https://answers.launchpad.net/hplip/+question/20692

It would be great if we could get language support for all languages in Launchpad though.

Hi All

what about the status for its localization? Where could we work on it?

Will there be a translation project in Launchpad (I cannot see one)?

Thanks and regards
