Bug Description

This problem appears in Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala using HPLIP Software Version 3.9.12 (or less) with the following printers and drivers:

HP LaserJet 2200 Postscript (recommended)
HP Color LaserJet CP4005 Postscript (recommended)
HP LaserJet 1320.

Seems to be a general HPLIP bug on Karmic (also reported on https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/hplip/+bug/492197).

Additionally, some "Print Settings" on the graphical HPLIP Device Manager are disabled or cannot be changed. The same settings are enabled and can be changed on the default "Printer Configuration" (system-config-printer 1.1.12).

I've been playing around with settings for this printer a little more, and here's a bit more detail:

Step 1. Install the printer and set the following default options:
Duplex Unit: Installed
2-sided printing: off
-> All print jobs (e.g. from Acrobat reader) default to single sided (and print single sided). User can choose to print double sided and this works.

Step 2. Modify the default settings as follows:
Duplix Unit: installed
2-sided printing: long-edge binding
-> all jobs default to (and print) double sided. If user sets 2-sided printing option to 'off', job still prints single-sided.

Step3. Modify the default settings again:
Duplix Unit: installed
2-sided printing: off
-> all jobs show default 2-sided setting = 'off', but they print double sided.

Step 4. Modify default settings again as follows:
Duplix Unit: not installed
2-sided printing: off
-> Print jobs show default setting of 2-sided = off, and print single sided. User can set duplex printing on by setting 'duplex unit' to installed and then choosing long/short edge binding.

This problem seems to be a duplicate of:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/karmic/+source/cups/+bug/487902
The fix has been released for Lucid but not for Karmic.
The CUPS version on Karmic is still 1.4.1-5 with the DUPLEX and other bugs that makes printing experience a nightmare.
Can someone release an update for Karmic?
