Bug Description

I have dual booted XP and Ubuntu 9.04 with a manual install of hplip-3.9.8. My LaserJet 1100a is recognized by XP and printing works fine. When running Ubuntu I ran a hp-check, results follow.

howard@howard-presario:~$ hp-check

HP Linux Imaging and Printing System (ver. 3.9.8)
Dependency/Version Check Utility ver. 14.3

Copyright (c) 2001-9 Hewlett-Packard Development Company, LP

under certain conditions. See COPYING file for more details.

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the
HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies
are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro
supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball
has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode
will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

A message showed "HPLIP Device Status
                                  HP_LaserJet_1100 Printer (dev/parport0)
                                  Device communication error (5012)"

If I go to System>Administration>Printing the HP_1100 shows up and when asked will print a test page successfully (despite the reported communication error). What causes this problem and how do I fix it?

I used Synaptic Package Manager to uninstall hplip.3.9.2. I then used the web site directions to manually download and install hplip.3.9.8. On the step for dependencies use the slider and be sure to get the whole command line. Similarly for the configure step. At the end of the configure command line add --enable-pp-parport0 before execution, then execute the command. This will give parallel port capabilities. Be sure there are no warnings/errors at the end of the processes. After successful compile and install a hp-setup will give you a screen that allows choice of a parallel printer.

My error, the add to the command line should be --enable-pp-build. Also if you run sudo chown -R : (your user name here) /dev/parport0 the "Device communication error (5012)" will go away. It is really a permission error not a real communication error.

I just got HPLIP talking to the parallel port on my PC, by simply adding the user(s) to the group 'lp'.. (System > Administration > Users and Groups.., in my Ubuntu 9.10); does what it says on the tin now with my HP LaserJet 1200, no problem! :-D

Command to add user to lp group

usermod -g lp <username>

I do not know. I will see what happens and then comment.
