Bug Description

When trying to print anything under ubuntu 9.04, it's a matter of luck whether the document gets printed. Sometimes it works, sometimes the printer needs to be unplugged from power to restart. When restarting, it needs to be unplugged from the usb port, otherwise it freezes again.
As I said, sometimes it works, sometimes not. I haven't been able to figure out what the problem is or how to reproduce the error. The only thing that is sure: After the first document is printed, I cannot print a second one - the printer always freezes.
Restarting might or might not work. Sometimes restarting the printer once it prints, sometimes it takes ten times to get it to print. Very annoying...

Please update your Ubuntu and/or install the latest version of HPLIP.

If you still have a problem run hp-check -t and post the output.

Thanks.

Aaron

I have the latest version of Ubuntu and installed the latest version of HPLIP as well, but the problem seems to persist. The first document usually prints well, but when trying to print another document, the printer freezes. I tried to use a different usb-cable, but to no avail.
The problem is not with the end of the first document as I first thought - I can still access the printer menu etc., but with printing the next one. I then need to unplug the usb cable and the power cord, replug the power cord and wait until the printer is online. Then I can replug the usb cable, otherwise the printer will freeze again a second time, sometimes even a third time.
Attached is the output of hp-check -t.

Same problem here. Latest HPLIP version and Ubuntu 9.04
Sometimes it works well, sometimes just no way to get it working. I installed windows xp just to test if it was a printer hardware issue and it works fine there.

The output of hp-check -t with frozen printer is attached

Same problem also trying to print through the network (via IPP) on another Ubuntu 9.04 machine with latest HPLIP.

An observation: The printer froze again - now I did the following:
I unplugged the power cord and plugged it in again, but left the printer connected to the computer via usb.
The printer tried to boot up, but hung after about 3 seconds. Unplugging, plugging in again (but leaving it connected), - same story. It repeated about five times, then it booted up succesfully and started printing.
The second time the printer froze again, I gave up after about 7 times unplugging and replugging, disconnected the printer from the computer and then replugged the printer. Then it worked.
So some information from the computer to the printer seems to hang it.

Another test: as AlmaTlust said, if the printer is frozen (and it freezes righ after pushing the print button in any app), and you unplug the power but not USB it freezes again a few seconds after you've replugged the power cable.
But if you do the same and delete the print job (either in CUPS web interface or through the printing applet) while the power is disconnected, the printer boots fine and is responding. Then you try to print again: it might print, or it might freeze again.

Hi Luca Zorzi, AlmaTlust,

Thanks for helping us while figuring out the issue.

Are you seeing any information under status tab of HP Device Manager / Tollbox when the printer frozen?
When the printer is frozen, is printer is in "start state" (First button) under "Printer Control" tab of Device Manager?

We need some log information to figure it out
1. Please set the cups log level to debug2
Open the file /etc/cups/cupsd.conf and set the LogLevel attribute value to debug2
Restart the Cups (execute "/etc/init.d/cups restart"
2. Please remove all file under "/var/log/cups" directory
3. Reproduce the problem
4. please attach the "access_log" file and "error_log" in the directory /var/log/cups (When the problem is reproduced)

Thanks for supporting HPLIP,
Naga Samrat.

Hi Naga,
thanks for looking at this bug.

When in frozen state, the hp toolbox reports the printer as Started/Processing, then if I hit refresh it pops up a message that says: "Device comunication error (5012)"

I tried to put cups' log level to debug2 but it doesn't start up, when set to debug it starts, and here is the output

Maybe it's irrilevant but the cartridge (only black is on at the moment) is at "very low level" according to the toolbox, but no luck putting on photo ink (low level) and color cartridge (good level)

I upgraded to Kubuntu Karmic, which ships HPLIP 3.9.4b, and had no luck. Upgraded to 3.9.8, still no luck.

Than i had an idea: try to connect the printer using the front USB plug (the one near the card reader): IT WORKS!

It's a workaround, but this bug is still here, as in windows the printer works well with the rear USB plug.

I had the same problem with /var/logs/cups - setting cups to debug2 didn't work, cups did not restart. in debug mode it wouldn't record any error. The printer just freezes, by the way, it's every time now, I can't print from my computer.
I tried plugging my printer into different usb plugs, but none work, - probably because I only have usb 2.0 plugs. Lucas working usb plug might be an usb 1.1 plug? Could that be the reason?

I didn't change the USB port on my computer (they're all 2.0 BTW), but on the printer: if you look near the printer's card reader there's another usb plug (see attached picture)

Hi Luca Zorzi, AlmaTlust,

Luca, You reported that you are able to print from front USB port and not able to print using rear USB port, can you please check are you able to add printer using rear USB Port?.

please run "sudo chown yourname /dev/bus/usb/" (yourname is user name in your system)
Can you please run "hp-print" from command line as root, and let us know the result.

Update: I deleted all instances of hp-photosmart-7700 series (there were 3) and reinstalled through the cups webinterface. ...
Done. I can now print several documents from the rear port as well using the hpcups backend. It still freezes when using the hpijs backen. (somehow it installed both, I think because of the automatic printer install process in Ubuntu).
Attached is the cups error log.

from hp-cups log it showing that you installed hpcups (not hpijs) and It seems that you are using hpijs ppd for hpcups driver.

even from the automatic print installer you can select hpcups ppd it function.

hp-setup will do this automatically.
Can you please confirm are you able to print if add your printer using "hp-setup -i" and connect to rear usb port.

Can you try the workaround mentioned in https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=462048#c23 (This is for suse).

Steps for Ubuntu:

(a) Delete the existing printer queues. It can be done by launching cups web page (http://localhost;631)

(b) launch printing dialog.
      System ---> Administration ---> Printing

(c) Connect your USB printer.

(d) Add new printer.
  (i) Click New.
(ii) In your Select device screen , under the devices panel select your printer being listed.
(iii) In your select device screen , you will see Connection Under description. Expand if its collapsed and select "USB".
  (iv) Click Forward
  (v) Enter inforrmation in Describe Printer screen. Click Apply.

Send a job to print. is it printing with out any issue?

Right now I have two entries in cups. The one that starts with usb://hp/... works fine, the one that starts with hp:/usb/... freezes the printer (although I can use this one for hp_toolbox to get printer info and stuff)

The one that starts with usb:// uses the cups usb backend. And the one that starts with hp:/usb/ uses the HPLIP hp backend. Looks like there is some issue with bi-directional communication in hp backend. Anyway it is good to know that you are able to print using cups backend.

Hello
I've read all articles mentioned by Mubeen Jukaku and the articles linked in. While hplip detect the printer status it reads back information from printer using USB bi-directional feature. If you modify USB to set it to uni-directional connection the problem disappear. You can have that setting e.g. recompiling the kernel to disable bi-directional usb or if you use the printer front usb port (that is unidirectional).

I did some trials and the simple workaround suggested to Mubeen Jukaku and AlmaTlust work fine for me (Ubuntu Maverick). Connection remain bi-directional but hplip doesn't ask to the printer for diagnostic (like ink level ...) and the printer never lock.
With printer installed:
- Right click printer - Select Properties
- Click on Change button related to URI
- On right panel select USB instead of hplip

Had same problem on 11.10.

Went to printers, properties for the printer, settings, make and model: change, selected HP, then forward, and I noticed it was set to 7700, so I changed it to 7760 photo (though I only have the 7760), and the job it was freezing up on beforehand printed fine after the change.

I have not tested it long term, but its working now, when it did not before.
