Bug Description

Download HP Linux Imaging and Printing System (ver. 3.9.2). Setup CP1215 printer and it prints normally. However the yellow alignment is off. It is about 1mm below the rest of the colours. There is no facility to align the colours. Windows prints fine.

Also the opensource foo2hp drive prints without this problem

This printer is listed as fully supported on the HPLIP website - this is why I bought it. However its pretty much usless to me until this is resolved.

Is there any plan to have this fixed in the next release of HPLIP?

Any ideas when that might be?

Brian

I also see this problem. The Yellow color is shifted about 1 millimeter down. All other planes match properly. Google brings up a number of similar postings on other websites, so this seems to be a common problem.

What is interesting is that this occurs with some Windows driver versions as well.

-> The driver that shipped on the CD works fine. So the hardware is ok
-> Foo2hp doesn't work for me either. Additionally it has a number of other problems, hplip works much better.
-> The newest windows driver produces the same bug(via network print)
-> It seems that using the CD driver and printing to the printer via a samba share has the yellow color incorrectly aligned too.

The last point seems strange. Samba prints an octet stream, so it just forwards the data generated from the Windows driver(which works on a direct USB connection) 1:1 to the printer. I don't see how it can shift one color plane without making the whole printout unrecognizeable garbage. I'll have to do more investigation here. Maybe the printer returns some alignment info to the driver via USB?

I tried updating the firmware and calibrating the printer(via the Windows tools), nothing helped. I believe the printer hardware is OK.

The simplest fix is probably adding some extra filter to the cups filter chain that shifts the yellow plane a bit. I am a programmer myself, but I have no idea how the cups filter work(and little time), so don't wait for me to implement such a fix.

Okay, another update: The newest Windows driver from the HP website also works, but only when printing via USB, but not when printing over a network share.

Is it possible that the printer driver is reading some information from the printer that is used to correct this problem? Might the hplip driver try to do the same, but fail due to some reason(e.g. wrong permissions, whatever)? Or is this feature not implemented in hplip?

It would be great if this issue could be resolved. It is the only problem I have left, otherwise this printer is working perfectly.

I did some more testing with the windows sharing behavior:

1) I shared the CP1215 printer on Windows(works locally), installed it on another windows box. I let the remote box download the driver from the server. Yellow alignment works fine

2) I booted Linux on the server, shared the printer via samba with the same share name and access credentials. Yellow alignment still works! (Windows->Linux print)

3) I renamed the printer name to something else, reinstalled it on windows. This time I picked the driver from the driver list manually(ie, used the one that were installed by the HP driver package, and work if the printer is connected via USB) -> Yellow alignment fails.

So I guess whatever fixes the yellow alignment on windows is stored in the .inf files. I am not sure how relevant this is for hplip, but at least I have a way now to print a color print from a windows client without rebooting my server.

The attached colorline0001.jpg file shows the issue. It is a scanned in printout of a line of underscores with different colors. Line 7 shows the correct result from the Windows driver - Black, blue, yellow, green, red. The upper lines(5, 6) have the yellow slightly lower, which makes the green a double-line of Cyan and Yellow, and the red appears as a Magenta and Yellow Line.

Is there any shift toward solving this bug? Who is responsible to it? How can I help without diving into the code?

Hi there,

I installed new driver hplip-3.9.12 last night and yellow alignment
seems to be fixed - there was a new step in the installation which I
suspect was loading new firmware to the printer, but this is only a
guess.

Anyway works well now

Still a bug on a fresh install of Natty:

There are options for alignment (comboboxes for the colours) but are not working.

I have attached an image from the options to align the colours but doesn't work, may I use another ICM colour profile?

I think this bug is solved with the hplip version provided with raring. There is a combo called "ICM Color Profile" with an option for our printer and it seems to work pretty good. Please, test your printers and mark this bug as solved (if it is solved).
