Bug Description
I installed the driver for this printer and works OK. However, the printer start to fail when I tried to print some time later. The OS send a message that "printer may be is not connected". The "HPLIP Device Manager" reports that "Device communication error".
I had his problem since I installed one actualization driver on Ubutu 8.04; I think I use the latest version installed by synaptic. I changed by the new one (3.9.6) but the problem persist. I found that it is possible to print if I turn off and then tun on but the communication is lost some minutes after the last print.

I have similar problem: I have a HP Laserjet 2300d (connected with an USB port) that worked nicely with Karmic Kubuntu (64-bit). After the upgrade to Lucid, it stopped working. I've tried but I cannot get it to work again. The computer sees the printer:
$ lsusb
(...)
Bus 007 Device 002: ID 03f0:0b17 Hewlett-Packard LaserJet 2300d
(...)
But it fails to communicate with it somehow:

When I try to set it up, hplip crashes:
