Bug Description

The hplip software on fedora 11 (hplip-3.9.2-5.fc11.x86_64) installs the ppd file for the HP PS c5300 Series hpijs with CUPS to drive the HP Photosmart C5580 All-In_one I have. With the latest updates I can print to DVD again, but a 1 or 2 mm area is clipped off the top of the printed DVD. I had assumed this was a physical limitation until I used the Windows XP software to print on the same physical hardware and it was able to print all the way to the top of the DVD.

I've been using the "kewpie" program I wrote to give me control of the margins and align the printout exactly. You can find a description (and the source if you want it) of the program here:

 http://home.att.net/~Tom.Horsley/kewpie/kewpie.html

and you can see a scan of a printed DVD showing the flat spot on top here:

 http://home.att.net/~Tom.Horsley/kewpie/118mm-scan.png

I'd include the output from hp-check, but I can't seem to find a version I can download from the repos without conflicts. I think some things need to make it all the way from updates-testing to updates before I'll be able to fetch a compatible version of hp-check.

Anyone happen to know if I can throw in some \HWMargins tweaks in the .ppd file to fix this? I also see the release notes for hpcups says some things about better margin control, anyone know if hpcups would fix this?

OK, I now tried this with the brand new hpcups raster driver from fedora rawhide
(hplip-3.9.8-14.fc12.x86_64) and it prints CDs and DVDs the exact same way as the
hpijs driver did with the same 1 to 2 mm clipping at the top.

I see various comments in the release notes about improved margin adjustments in
hpcups, but I can't find any docs on how to use such adjustments. Anyone know how
I can try to print on those top 2 millimeters?

I know the hardware can do it, because the same printer can print the full DVD (including
the top 2 mm) when using the HP software on Windows XP.

I turned on debug log level and printed my test image. For some reason the first print attempt failed
with the printer claiming the size of the printput didn't match the size of the media. I cancelled that
attempt, checked my printer settings (which looked correct), and tried again. On the 2nd attempt it
printed fine with the same old 2mm flat spot being clipped.

Hi,

HWMargins specifies the hardware margin limitations of the printer. To set your margins through ppd, please look for ImageableArea section, and set the required values for parameters for your CDDVD option therein.

For example, the option your ppd would look something like:
ImageableArea CDDVD120/CD or DVD 120 mm: "0.00 36.00 237.00 237.00"

You can set the parameters here for margin control.

Thank your for your support of HPLIP!

is my new web page documenting the success I had tweaking ImageableArea, but it also demonstrates that I have no actual idea what I really did or why it worked :-). Whatever is going on though, I can indeed print the entire printable surface of the CD or DVD now with no clipping

Changed in hplip:
status: New → Fix Released

In what version of HPLIP is this issue fixed? I have a C5580 and tried the exact instructions posted by Tom and got completely different results in which the entire CD image was shifted from the upper-left corner to the lower-right corner by about 1/2 inch.
