Looks like your HP LaserJet 1018 is set up with the wrong driver: HP LaserJet 1012 Foomatic/hpijs, hpijs 2.8.7 from Intrepid?
Did you upgrade your system from Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid)?
Please remove your printer under System->Adminstration->Printing and let the Plug 'n Print autodetection happen again by unplugging and replugging your printers USB cable.
If this still gives the same issue please try to manually select the right printer driver using System->Administration->Printing.

Now works HP LaserJet 1018 for me: I have downloaded firmware from http://embar.wen.ru/html/bylos/linux/hp/sihp1018-dl.zip and extracted this archive. I put the file sihp1018.dl in /usr/share/foo2zjs/firmware directory. I have installed hplip, hp-ppd, hplip-data, hpijs, foo2zjs, libcupsimage2-dev packages (I don't know what of thees are necesary). I also run "make install-hotplug" in directory where I extracted http://foo2zjs.rkkda.com/foo2zjs.tar.gz archive.
