Bug Description

It seems
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/hplip/+bug/258881
is not fully fixed in HPLIP 2.8.9.

See this Suse/Novell bug report:
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=429750

According to what the customer reported, it seems that
he had at some time ago for his HP Deskjet 9800 printer
the paper sizes A3 and Envelelope C4.

In HPLIP 2.8.7 both are missing.

Even in HPLIP 2.8.9 there is A3 but EnvC4 is still missing.

I build HPLIP 2.8.9 using the following configure settings
  --enable-foomatic-rip-hplip-install
  --disable-foomatic-drv-install
  --enable-foomatic-ppd-install
to get readymade PPDs.

Therefore I think that the hpijs driver information files
"hpijs.drv* are irrelevant for this kind of build.

Please have also a build for readymade PPDs
in mind when you provide a fix or a patch.
Many Thanks!

With hplip 2.8.9 the A3 support was fixed, but the Deskjet 9800 never had EnvC4 support.

If fact looking back at hplip-2.7.12 which was the last release based on foomatic db there was only one printer with EnvC4 support and that was the postscript PPD for the Business Inkjet 2600. Which is no different than hplip 2.8.9.

I have no plans to add more EnvC4 support.

I am sorry that I caused confusion.
I misinterpreted what the customer wrote.
It is no longer a bug report.

I would like to change it into a feature request regarding
"add more EnvC4 support".

Reasoning:

The "C4" envelope is the most popular "big" envelope at least in Germany
for almost anything which has A4 format and cannot/should not be folded, see
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Envelope "International standard sizes".

Any printer which can print on a "C4" envelope should have
a matching "EnvC4" paper size.

More generally:
All "International standard sizes" for envelopes should be supported
by HPLIP (provided the printer can print on such a media).

In particular
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=429750#c5
shows that a Deskjet 9800 can print on a "C4" envelope.

The fix is easy: All HP inkjet support custom page sizes, arbitrary page sizes between the minimum and the maximum which fits through the mechanics, so only appropriate paper size entries need to be added to the .drv file/the PPD files. No change in HPIJS is needed.
