Bug Description

I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 20.4.1 from 18.04. I have a HP M277dw wireless printer.

Printing works but scanning does not work.

I have hplip 3.20.3 installed.

When I run simplescan the scanner is found and can be selected, but when I try to scan, a dialog comes up with the text: "Failed to scan unable to start scan" is shown.

xsane also lists the scanner, but when I try to scan, an Error dialog comes up with the text: "Failed to start scanner: Error during device I/O".

hp-check reports:

* warning: ubuntu-20.04 version is not supported. Using ubuntu-19.10 versions dependencies to verify and install
* warning: HPLIP-Installation: Auto installation is not supported for ubuntu distro 20.04 version

which is not comforting. The full outpur from hp-check below.

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies are
installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball has the
proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

Check types:
a. EXTERNALDEP - External Dependencies
b. GENERALDEP - General Dependencies (required both at compile and run time)
c. COMPILEDEP - Compile time Dependencies
d. [All are run-time checks]

I had the same error. According to https://forum.ubuntuusers.de/topic/hp-laserjet-pro-mfp-m277dw-druckt-scannen-geht/ a redownload of the plugin could help: "hp-plugin -i". Does that work?

For me, it did.

I solved my problem by downloading hplip-3.20.9 and not installing the GUI (which requires the Python 2 lib python-pyqt5) or the Fax functionality (which requires Python 2 lib python-reportlabs). I installed hplip-3.20.9 and then after that the plugin hplip-3.20.9-plugin. Now my scanner works.

HP M277dw is still marked in models.dat as it doesn't need a plugin. It is the same for version 3.20.11. I believe the issue shouldn't be closed till the proper fix is applied.

Shivani,

would you mind fixing models.dat to reflect findings of this bug? Or you can just revert the change made in 3.20.6 as suggested in #1883898.

I have same problem, Ubuntu 20, HP M277dw wireless printer which worked prior to 20. The USB board in printer is damaged and wireless is only option. I tried installing hplip but where it asks USB, or wireless I picked wireless but it asks to temporarily connect by USB which I can't do. I can print test pages and using printer front panel connect it to my home WiFi, and from Ubuntu I can print a test page. How can I finish installing hplip?

I also have a problem with the HP M277dw on Xubuntu 20.04 on a friend's computer.

I will try the `pdb3 /usr/share/hplip/plugin.py -i -g` workaround mentioned in [the link](https://askubuntu.com/questions/1245010/hplip-driver-install-fails-on-ubuntu-20-04) @Antonio Giménez posted above. Will post the results when I get back to that machine.

Is there anything we can help to get a fix upstream?

Thanks!
