Failed to install Plug-in for scanning

Printing works. Scanning fails. Error message says, "Driver Plug-in Required"
Clicking "Next>" brings up

"Failed to install Plug-in.
Either you have chosen to skip teh Plug-in installation or entered
incorrect password."

running hp-plugin fails with
error: Python gobject/dbus may be not installed
error: Plug-in install failed.
