Bug Description

Hi!

we have an issue on Fedora Silverblue https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1695713 - Silverblue is new type of OS, which is based on flatpack and rpm-ostree, and its feature is to have /usr directory as readonly (only /usr/local is writeable, because it is symlink to /var/local).

AFAIK it can be solved by two means:

1) patch internal plugin script to put binary blobs into /usr/local by default/only on Silverblue and change the code to look there for those libraries (this way it would be needed to patch sane-backends too, so it is not very good solution)

2) openly share binary blobs which acts as plugins - this way we can pack it into package and Silverblue can have it installed (PREFFERED)

Would you mind looking into it? It is kind of critical issue on Silverblue, because all devices which needs plugin to work are unusable.

Thank you in advance,

Zdenek

Oh what timing, just discovered this problem today and both my personal and work computers are running Silverblue.

It would be helpful if redistribution were permitted (no modification needed) for the binaries so rpmfusion packages can be created: https://bugs.launchpad.net/hplip/+bug/1214318

no longer affects: hplip (Ubuntu)

The person to mention is ~suma-byrappa in the bug report I linked to. This can't be resolved until the licensing is granted by HP

I got Gaurav's name from Smith Kennedy, who is part of PWG group for HP company. Gaurav was the first person to answer and he is HPLIP dev lead, so he can escalate the matter in my opinion.

~gaurav-sood Is there an update on the matter?

It's a similar situation with openSUSE Tumbleweed when using transactional-server role with desktop environment. It has a read-only root file system too.

I would appreciate a modern distro-integrated way to install software (preferably freedom-respecting) needed for proper operation of hardware i bought from HP.
