Bug Description

Manfred,

I did this:
     paul@paul-System-Product-Name:~$ sudo adduser $paul lp
     [sudo] password for paul:
adduser: The user `lp' already exists.
     paul@paul-System-Product-Name:~$ sudo adduser $USER lp
     Adding user `paul' to group `lp' ...
Adding user paul to group lp
     Done.
     paul@paul-System-Product-Name:~$

I turned on the HP Deskjet 3630 printer.

I've restarted my Linux box using Ubuntu 18.04LTS
HPLIP Status Service
No system tray detected on this system.
     Unable to start, exiting.

I enabled sudo hp-logcapture
I started HP Device Manager.
Deskjet_3630 _2 chosen in ‘Print Settings’ and ‘Printer Control’.
The chosen, single page text, file failed to print.

I stopped hp-logcapture.

I went to https://bugs.launchpad.net/hplip/+filebug
I looked at some of the existing problem reports.
One report suggested deleting multiple print queues.
I had three print queues for the same printer.
Using the Ubuntu Control Panel, I deleted the queues.

I restarted the Linux box.
/etc/cups/ppd/ is empty

I used hp-setup to add a printer.
/etc/cups/ppd/ now holds these files:
     DeskJet_3630.ppd
     DeskJet-3630-series.ppd

Using the Ubuntu Control Panel, I deleted this printer: DeskJet-3630-series
Current ppd status:
/etc/cups/ppd/ contains DeskJet_3630.ppd
/usr/share/ppd/HP/ contains: hp-deskjet_3630_series.ppd.gz

I started the HP Device Manager
I printed a single page file: Print Test 1p.rtf
I got five pages out.
Most of the printed text looks, to my untrained eye, to be print formatting instructions, in amongst which there are pieces of (my) text.

On a whim,I tried the Print Test Page option on the 'Actions' tab.
The 'HPLIP Printer Test Page' printed OK.
Whatever that tells you.

already built HPLIP supplied tarball has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode will check both of the above cases (both
compile- and run-time dependencies).

Check types:
a. EXTERNALDEP - External Dependencies
b. GENERALDEP - General Dependencies (required both at compile and run time)
c. COMPILEDEP - Compile time Dependencies

Srinivas,
Hi,

This morning I had a Ubuntu software update notification.
I've updated the software (There was some python3 stuff in there.
I've restarted my Linux box.
I started the printer.
I opened my test file /Home/Documents/Computing/Print Test 1p.rtf with LibreOffice Writer
I can print /Home/Documents/Computing/Print Test 1p.rtf from within the opened file.

I opened HP Device Manager
I chose 'Print'
I added /home/paul/Documents/Computing/Print Test 1p.rtf
I accepted all the defaults on the 'Setect Printer and Options' page
[The only printer option is DeskJet_3630]
[Print File]
I get 2 1/2 pages of mono-spaced text.
I can recognise the contents of the test file, but most of it seems to be printer control information.

I've attached the .rtf file that I have printed/am trying to print.

Thanks,
Paul

CUPS regards an rtf file as MIME media type text/plain - so it prints everything in the file. libreoffice converts it to something else (PDF?) before sending it to CUPS.
