-----------------------

Using the ADF on a HP7140ix via Network via this command:

/usr/bin/scanimage \
--batch=test-%d.tif \
-d hpaio:/net/officejet_7100_series\?ip=<snip> \
--source Auto

When all the documents have been scanned, if --source is set at "Auto" and the ADF was used, the "Document feeder out of documents" is never displayed and the scanner continues to try to scan document from the ADF. Blank files are generated for each try.

When --source is set to ADF, we get the expected behavior. Progress message "Document feeder out of documents" is shown when all the documents have been scanner and scanimage exits.

Here an example when using "--source ADF" with a single document in the ADF:

Scanning -1 pages, incrementing by 1, numbering from 1
Scanning page 1
Scanned page 1. (scanner status = 5)
Scanning page 2
scanimage: sane_start: Document feeder out of documents

Here an example when using "--source Auto" with a single document in the ADF:

Scanning -1 pages, incrementing by 1, numbering from 1
Scanning page 1
Scanned page 1. (scanner status = 5)
Scanning page 2
Scanned page 2. (scanner status = 5) <---- Blank
Scanning page 3
Scanned page 3. (scanner status = 5) <---- Blank
Scanning page 4
Scanned page 4. (scanner status = 5) <---- Blank
Scanning page 5
Scanned page 5. (scanner status = 5) <---- Blank
Scanning page 6
Scanned page 6. (scanner status = 5) <---- Blank
Scanning page 7
Scanned page 7. (scanner status = 5) <---- Blank
Scanning page 8
<...>

Killing the process is required to make it stop.

Expected behavior:

Getting the same behavior as with --source ADF when the ADF is used and --source is set to Auto.

Hi Benjamin,
We tried to reproduce the issue in printer HP-officejet-pro-8610 as we don't have the printer officejet_7100_series in our lab. We will try to find the printer model you reported this issue and update our findings.

Here are the findings from our investigation on:

The issues seems to be not reproducible. We checked in Ubuntu 17.10 and Cent OS, with HP-officejet-pro-8610 printer and by using scanimage –batch=<filename> --source=Auto, it will display the message as “Invalid argument” after the 1st page got scanned. We are not seeing the infinite loop in our testing.

Thanks,
Nishitha

Hello Nishitha,

Just to clear any hardware malfunction out of the equation: The old package (hpoj-0.91) is detecting correctly when the feeder is out of documents using scanimage –batch=<filename> --source=Auto. That could also help tracking what has changed in the code...

Let me know if I can be of any help!

Benjamin.
