It would be great if hplip could support freedesktop.org basedir specification
http://standards.freedesktop.org/basedir-spec/latest/ar01s03.html

~/.hplip/ could be used as a fallback if $XDG_DATA_HOME/hplip/ does not exist.

Woops, I thought I was reporting on http://hplipopensource.com, not on launchpad.net.
