Bug Description
Go and read step 10 first, before you bother reading through the hp-check output. I'm no programmer, but I've tried everything I can think of.
Distribution installation:
Problem: HP Photosmart 5510 prints garbage
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install hplip hplip-hpijs cups cups-client
Command: sudo zypper install hplip hplip-hpijs cups cups-client
zypper added on dependencies:
"The following NEW packages are going to be installed:
cups cups-client dbus-1-python foomatic-filters gd hplip hplip-hpijs
hplip-sane libexif12 libgphoto2-6 libieee1284 liblockdev1 libsnmp30 libv4l
libv4l1-0 libv4l2-0 libv4lconvert0 lockdev python-gobject2 python-libxml2
python-qt4 python-sip python-xml sane-backends snmp-mibs
The following recommended package was automatically selected:
foomatic-filters"
2. Accepted dependencies
3. Adding the printer:
HP-setup Runs "Device Discovery"
Selected Network ethernet/Wireless network (direct connection or jetdirect)
Chose advanced options
Checked manual discovery and provided printer IP
Photosmart is discovered and assigned default name Photosmart_5510
checked add printer
Added user to lp and sys groups
rebooted
4. Test Page:
Verified that user is a member of sys and lp
Opened HP device manager a tried to print test page
Message: driver plugin required, clicked next
Downloaded plugin: installation sucessful
Printer printed several pages of odd characters
restarted printer to save paper
5.Set Photosmart_5510 as default lp printer
command: sudo lpadmin -d Photosmart_5510
6. tried to print textfile
command: lp text.txt
Still prints garbage
7. tried running hp-doctor, command was not found
8. Ran hp-check, found missing dependencies. I am not including that output because it is very long.
9. Ran hp-check --fix and downloaded missing dependencies. Here is the output from that.

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the
HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies
are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro
supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball
has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode
will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).
Check types:
a. EXTERNALDEP - External Dependencies
b. GENERALDEP - General Dependencies (required both at compile and run time)
c. COMPILEDEP - Compile time Dependencies
d. [All are run-time checks]

Do you want to add missing groups to user?(y=yes*, n=no)y
cmd = /usr/sbin/usermod -Gsys,lp root
Need to reboot system to take effect of user group.
10. Still prints garbage from both gui and lp.
All of these dependencies that were listed as missing/
Now if you want I can try the manual method. However, the instructions from the manual method do not list any of these in step 2 (C) of the installation instructions for Opensuse at http://
What exactly do you mean with
"OpenSuse 12.3 /SuseStudio build"?
I assume your system is not an usual openSUSE 12.3 system.
It seems you built your own system by using SUSE Studio?
If yes, what exactly did you build in SUSE Studio?
