Bug Description

HPLIP should provide PPD files which include
all standard media sizes that the particular printer supports or at least
all "Paper sizes known to Ghostscript" that the printer supports, see
https://www.ghostscript.com/doc/9.50/Use.htm#Known_paper_sizes

For example in current HPLIP version 3.12.11
neither in hp-deskjet_5900_series-hpijs.ppd "HP Deskjet 5900 Series hpijs, 3.12.11"
nor in hp-deskjet_5900_series.ppd "HP Deskjet 5900 Series, hpcups 3.12.11"
I find a PageSize entry for the "B6" standard ISO envelope size, see
https://answers.launchpad.net/hplip/+question/17684

I am having the same problem with a Photosmart 6515 (Costco version of the 6510). I was unable to print to an #10 envelope because of the paper size checking the printer does and no envelopes are available in the paper size options of the printer properties.

On the hp-check log it reports it can't find hpaio. This is an error in the script because it only looks in "/etc/sane.d/dll.conf" but on my system, Fedora 17 x86_64 it is in "/etc/sane.d/dll.d/hpaio".

Richard, I'd say your problem is described in bug #695078 not this one.

I should have been more clear but I believe my problem is still not having envelopes as a "paper" size. I only mentioned dll.conf because the hp-check script failed to find hpaio but I'm not having any problems scanning or printing otherwise. It that the hp-check script is incorrectly reporting that it can't find hpaio.

This bug was reported 7 years ago and still not solved.

Does it mean that Ubuntu is so rarely used for office jobs which includes printing to various envelopes and other paper sizes not currently provided by PPD files for HP printers?

This is particularly frustrating because LibreOffice also has a long-standing bug of missing the ability to define custom page in the print dialog (see https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=78916).
