Update Notification from HP Device Manager does Nothing

Whenever a new update to HPLiP is available (for example the recent 3.12.11 release), I see a notification from HP Device Manager on my desktop asking me if I would like to upgrade. I click yes (or whatever the button says) and it opens a terminal window for a split second then it closes. There's not any apparent error messages or anything.

I can confirm that the upgrade works fine running `hp-upgrade` from terminal.

I've tried this on two Ubuntu 12.04 computers with stock kernel, and one with the quantal kernel. Same issue on all three.
