en_GB locale faultly translated to Arabic by a user

Hi, just received the upgrade to 5.6.1. Installed on Linux Mint 21.1. After opening HomeBank, I was suddenly greeted with Arabic text everywhere. Locale was set to System Default, however neither that nor specifically choosing en_GB gives me English and instead everything is in Arabic, including the launch shortcut in the Mint menu. However I've been able to set en_AU in Homebank as a workaround.

Running against GTK+ 3.24.33
Linux Mint Cinnamon 21.1
Homebank installed via official PPA

Strange, there is no change on that area since many release (years).
I run mint 21.1 myself and do not have the trouble

changing the local only take effect after closing and running HB again.

1) could you try get back to system default close hb

2) type export | grep LANG
=> and paste the output here

type export | grep LC_
=> and paste the output here

3) look into the /home/<username>/.config/homebank/preference
=> what is language= ?

4) delete this line into the preference file and launch HB
=> still the problem ?

Language= is empty. Still the same problem too, as OSativa.

I don't know if it is related, but looking at https://translations.launchpad.net/homebank there is just en_GB listed (and Welsh), with 60 missing translations, under the "Translation for trunk" section. No other locales are listed, so wondering if this is a missing file from 5.6.1?

It seems that an user, on 2022-12-09, has translated in arabian the wrong file (en_gb.po).
Need to restore it with a previous version.

For you users, there are several way of workaround this in waiting next release:
- delete the en_GB arabic file, so you will revert to en_US (native code)
- use the provided mo file

the homebank.mo file location is:
- GNU/Linux: /usr/share/locale/en_GB/LC_MESSAGES
- Windows: C:\Program Files (x86)\HomeBank\share\locale\en_GB\LC_MESSAGES

Applied the fix and the titles are now in English, however, the desktop menu item still shows in Arabic.

I had the same issue with the menu item staying in Arabic.

My workaround - rename the menu entry from "HomeBank" to "Homebank" (lower-case 'B') and it will show in English. Renaming it back to "HomeBank" and it reverts to Arabic.

For those of us who are not expert, please can you tell me where the file is to delete on an Ubunuty system?

The file already in /usr/share/locale/en_GB/LC_MESSAGES is owned by Root and I cannot overwrite it with the one downloaded from this thread.

Is there an easy to follow method please?

Hi Kalico, yes, same issue, in terminal I did 'sudo nautilus' to launch the file browser as root user giving me full access to the file system. I was then able to rename the old file and copy/paste the new one into the folder. It might be a different app depending on what OS you're using.

The homebank.mo fix has sorted the program. I still have the menu item in Arabic. #13 above, "rename the menu item" May well be a solution. But I have no idea how to implement it. My menu doesn't seem to have a way to rename the menu items...

Edit… The homebank.mo fix, followed by a restart, fixed the menu item as well as the program...

Not sure this is entirely fixed. I have just updated to version 5.6.2 and the Add Transaction window still has some Arabic.

I'll attach a screen shot.

No, this bug (the whole en-GB translation is done and released)
The re-upload of the old en-GB failed so I re-translated every string manually to fix it.

Normally, translation bug can be opened only when there is a code problem (bug instruction no one seems to read).
Except for french: users are in charge of translation. I have more useful thing to do.

Think I've fixed line 800 and reverted it to what it should be (don't understand why there's an underscore in "A_ccount" though!). I'm not sure how you prevent rogue translations entering releases though if anyone can freely edit translations; sounds a bit dangerous to me...

This is a common way of working in open source/free software, translation is a community effort, like everything: there is pros and cons.

Globally it works pretty well, in last 25 years such problem never happens, let's hope it was a simple mistake and indeed... not a volunteer sabotage for obscure or senseless reason.

Maxime, I have corrected the en_GB version of homebank.mo with the rouge Arabic. Is it possible to replace the rouge with my version, so that it is available to everyone?
