Bug Description

To run and dev new webapps it would be nice to have new features of mysql-server-5.1 on hardy-server 8.04 LTS. Waiting for the next LTS release seems to be very hard ;)

If this backport isn't possible of to many higher lib requirements and so on, please leave a short message.

thx from Berlin .. Gos77

bump? Is that even appropriate in a bug tracker? :)

I too would like to see a backport of 5.1 while trying to remain using 8.04 LTS

I second this... the replication features and partitioning features that are included in 5.1 that arent in 5.0 alone can make a world of difference.

If we could get some type of response on this it would be HIGHlY appreciated.

packages build successfully however I seem to be getting the following error:

mysql-client-5.1: Depends: libmysqlclient16 (>= 5.1.31-1ubuntu2~8.04prevu1) but it is not going to be installed

Depends: mysql-common (>=5.1.30really5.0.75-0ubuntu5) but 5.0.51a-3ubuntu5.4 is to be install

Once we solve this I think it will make ALOT of people happy.

I have not as this is my first time ever hearing about it and not something I want to try using for the first time on a production server. If I get time I guess I could virtualbox version and test....if I get time.. I crack myself up :)

I found this but I have not tried it myself :

In order to install the version 5.1 you need to add additionals DEB repository to your APT’s config.
For instance append those two new repository to your /etc/apt/sources.list files:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/monty/ubuntu gutsy main universe restricted multiverse

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/smurf/ubuntu gutsy main universe restricted multiverse
Then you can install it:
apt-get update
apt-get install mysql-server-5.1

I made virtualbox test machine and attempted to use the previously
mentioned ppas and got the following message.

E: /var/cache/apt/archives/mysql-server-5.1_5.1.22rc-2~ppa5_i386.deb:
pre-dependency problem - not installing mysql-server-5.1

I noticed I had to install mysql-common first.
apt-get install mysql-common
AND then
apt-get install mysql-server-5.1

This got rid of the pre-dependency error shown above.

Could not get the karmic version to build, but jaunty builds fine:

prevu mysql-dfsg-5.1/jaunty

But will not install without mysql-common-5.0, therefore it is also necessary to do:

prevu mysql-dfsg-5.0/jaunty

Then mysql-server-5.1 installs fine. Seems to work well on my Hardy installation.

I decided (had to) upgrade my php5-mysql because a CMS I'm installing won't accept 5.0.51a, so I also did:

prevu php5/jaunty

All works fine, although I would like to have a matching php5-mysql (will be available in 10.04 LTS).

I've heard of folks using 5.1.22 on Hardy (as pulled down from the aforementioned PPAs) who are having replication problems. Might be best to avoid this non-GA version.
