I've built it with prevu and works fine (msn, jabber, irc) and the bug #294904 seems resolved!

I tested the backport of the pidgin 2.5.3-0ubuntu1 on a Intrepid system. It builds fine, installs fine and works fine (MSN, XMPP, IRC tested without any issues).

Tested on Intrepid and Hardy. No problems with prevu on both Hardy and Intrepid. Everything tested worked as intended.

I believe this will need a source change backport, as Pidgin slightly changed it's DBus interface, breaking integration with the fast-user-switch-applet (see bug 324020)

2.5.4 was released in Jaunty. Should this bug be modified to reflect that?

Yes, we could test Pidgin 2.5.4, but I think that the issue with FUSA will remain, because the fix is in the package fast-user-switch-applet version 2.24.0-0ubuntu8 that at the moment is only in Jaunty...so I think we should first backport fast-user-switch-applet...

Chris Coulson (chrisccoulson) wrote :

No, because that would mean that people who installed only the Pidgin backport or the FUSA backport would suffer with the same broken integration, unless the backports depended on each other, which is not a good solution.

The safest solution is to patch the Pidgin backport to have the same DBus interface as what is already in Intrepid.

The Pidgin Developers now maintain a PPA with backported versions:
https://launchpad.net/~pidgin-developers/+archive/ppa

These are not supported by the backporting projects.

Thank you for the tip! But the PPA version for Hardy was modified to work with FUSA or is still broken?

I'm not sure, but you can contact the pidgin developers and ask them.
Contact info should be on the Overview page on the PPA link.

At this stage it is unlikely we will see backports for these releases. Note the PPA that Micah already mentioned, which has the latest version for all releases since Hardy: https://launchpad.net/~pidgin-developers/+archive/ppa
