Can't enter text when offline and not obvious why

Bug Description
When offline the text area is disabled. The colour changes from white to a light grey but, at least in the Ubuntu theme, the difference is barely noticeable. The character limit is still shown and the send button active.
So, I can't enter text and it's not obvious why. Maybe disabling the send button and replacing the text with "offline"..?
