Well, according to this paragraph extracted of Wikipedia (1) publisher (I can't find something similar at facebook wiki):
"For the user there is a 420 character limit, with a 1000 character limit when posting on a friend's Wall. In comparison", so I can confirm this issue is still occurring using gwibber 2.29.90 under Lucid as well as daily ppa version. Thanks in advance

Perhaps you have not read the bug report fully.

Facebook does not impose a 140 character limit on status updates. But
Gwibber does not allow status updates if you only have Facebook
selected of more than 140 characters.

This also happens with the AMD64bit version of Ubuntu Lucid. My current gwibber version is 2.30.0.1
from system monitor:
Release: 10.04
Kernel: 2.6.32-22-generic
Gnome: 2.30.0
Mem:3.7GiB
Processor: AMD Turion(tm) 64X2 Mobile Technology TL-52

I only added a facebook broadcast account. Not a twitter one, and it still restricts my messages to 140 characters which is the limit for twitter messages.

The service is a novel idea when integrated into the OS via the gnome panel. It is awesome to have, just needs that little tweak to stop it from being useless... facebook can hold more than 140, and if gwibber holds me back i wont use it. To be useful, it needs to be true to the service capacities.

Although Gwibber counts down the 140 characters if I post something on facebook, it still sends the messages if they are longer than 140 (but shorter than 420). So the function of posting longer messages on facebook is not affected, it is just confusing that Gwibber shows that the message is too long, but is still able to send it...

I guess, message length for countdown should be calculated as a minimum allowed length of all selected protocols

Just to add confusion, there aren't always fixed limits per protocol. Statusnet for example can be configured with different limits per installation. That isn't important for identi.ca users, but private instances might well have been customised.

I agree with comment 7 otherwise, but it still wouldn't be necessarily accurate unless there was an option in account settings.

Since gwibber doesn't really restricts, and the bug also applies for other things than facebook, i changed name and description...
Hope everything is fine this way.

I have the same problem with Gwibber. At this time, I use it for Twitter and Facebook and I'm limited by 140 characters. I can't send a message with Gwibber for my Facebook account, it's blocked.

I agree we need to make the limit more flexible. The current implementation supports the lowest common denominator, out of all the services gwibber supports. It doesn't take into account what each account you have configured can support. The character limit is just one of many things affected by the need to support many services. I am targeting this feature for 3.2.

Bug still present in Gwibber 3.3.92, 140 characters limits also for Facebook (I did not test Status.net), and text in red when over-writing, but all the comment is well displayed on Facebook.
