Bug Description

As a number of other url-shorteners are already available, it would be nice to provide support for bit.ly (and their twin site, j.mp). Ideally integration with their login would be available as it is in other Twitter clients so that stats are combined into the desired account.

Yes, it would be very nice to have this implemented: bit.ly has features that others have not, like stats and such.

I'm working on a branch which will eventually add both bit.ly and j.mp support along with preferences support for a username.

I noticed Sandaruwan's branch (https://code.edge.launchpad.net/~sandaru1/gwibber/bitly) shortly after pushing my initial work up. His adds very basic support. I'm not sure if bitly likes people using the bitlyapidemo username, though.

missing bit.ly support keeps me from switching to gwibber :-(

Mind if I ask why j.mp was dropped from the summary? It's the exact same as bit.ly, but two characters shorter.

I dont think implementing bit.ly will automagically implement j.mp so please
open a new bug report for that :)

Valid point, I just figured one was needed for the other and that two bug reports would just be merged if I had done so.

Having just got gwibber working (different issue) it would be nice to get bit.ly working via a bit.ly account.

For me I've been using a bitly.pro beta account for a couple of months now using a custom domain, so using it via the API key would be pretty useful.

Plugins can now be created out of tree, so this is a good candidate for creating a plugin. You can look at lp:gwibber-service-sina as an example, unfortunately we don't have plugin developer documentation yet. However, if you are interested in developing a plugin (shouldn't be too difficult), join us in #gwibber on FreeNode and we can try to guide you through it
