gtk: recordmydesktop doesn't play nice with Gnome-Shell

recordmydesktop causes the gnome-shell top panel to disappear when recording, forcing me to kill via system monitor, unable to export movie due to this.

This may be because there is no gnome panel in gnome-shell.

This effects me too, in Ubuntu 10.04 beta1 i386, with all updates applied.

Another issue of this is because gnome 3 requires composition. Unity+recordmydesktop doesn't work well either.

From my point of view, gtk-recordmydesktop works fine with gnome-shell.

I tested it on Fedora 15 (with gnome-shell).

What i mean is that, if the screencast program is used with its default settings, it will make the gnome shell to hide its panels top & bottom. Nothing to worry, gnome-shell does not crash. Use the "r" key to restart the Gnome-Shell, after which you can stop the recording safely.

HOW TO FIX:

Advanced Settings -> Misc -> Uncheck "RESET CAPTURE AREA" & "Outline Capture Area On Screen".

I'm getting this issue with gnome-shell 3.2.1-0ubuntu1 on Ubuntu 11.10. The Alt+F2 'r' workaround Alex R mentions above also work for me, though it seems rather inelegant and ugly to me having to waste the first few seconds of my recordings just to get around a bug, and is certainly not a "Fix Released".

I should note that I'm using recordmydesktop via the terminal, and the top panel does come back temporarily while in the Activities view but disappears again upon return to the desktop. See attached video.

The Alt+F2 'r' workaround no longer works in Precise, which is also affected by this.

And why is this still marked "Fix Released"?

Yep, you can't do ALT+F2 without Gnome panel.

same thing, no menu control, will just fill up the drive till it cant anymore.
first time this happened I unplugged the PC

now I have been typing alt-F2
then
gnome-terminal
run htop, find PID number and kill pid number

so what is the fix and when will it be released?

The "Fix" was the aforementioned ALT+F2 then R deal. This bug won't get a fix otherwise, and can't get a fix.

A quite functional workaround is to just use ctrl+alt+s (recordmydesktop default shortcut to stop). The video stops recording, the gnome-panel reappears, and the "encoding" dialog opens.
