Bug Description

A while back I added code to autodetect the panel background color and pick the appropriate icon. This logic no longer works in trunk.

This was broken in r198, which switched to GI by default.

The other thing that broke with the switch was being able to close the app by hitting Ctrl-C in the terminal.
