Bug Description

Version 3.3.1 of gThumb (the one currently packaged for Trusty) uses the new GNOME header bars. It does this in every environment, meaning that when using Unity there are no window decorations save when the window is maximized, and then there are two window titles. This is inconsistent with any other application in Ubuntu.

There is some talk from the developers about adding an option for desktop environments other than GNOME shell (see: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=724238), but this certainly will not be ready for Trusty's release.

This version should therefore be patched if possible (as has been done with Nautilus/Files and a few other programs I believe) or, more simply, the version used in Saucy (3.0.2) should be used as default. The later option would make sense considering Trusty is an LTS release.

Thanks.

If we have to revert, we should only go to 3.2.6, since saucy's version is very old.
If a patch is provided, the upstream dev said he would carry it.

Didn't realize how old Saucy's version was. 3.2.6 seems to work.

Under non-Gnome DE's there is also no way to get to the preferences dialog in gThumb.

I have downgraded my 14.04 gthumb 64 bit systems to gthumb 3.2.6 with the debs from
http://launchpadlibrarian.net/162929872/gthumb-data_3.2.6-1ubuntu2_all.deb
and
http://launchpadlibrarian.net/162929685/gthumb_3.2.6-1ubuntu2_amd64.deb
then installed manually with dpkg.

All is working well, thank goodness, which is to be expected as they were the proposed versions for trusty before 3.3.1 was released. It's a pity the *ubuntu devs diod not notice the problem on non-gnome DEs as it would have prevented a lot of disappointed people from stopping using gthumb.

gthumb 3.3.x is a development series. Beware, unless you want to be on the bleeding edge.

If it is true that gthumb 3.3.x is a development series, perhaps it is not the right version for an LTS version of *Ubuntu. As I said, gthumb 3.2.6 works very well, so why not just revert to that in the release.

3.3 does work better with Gnome, which is why i've not been very willing to downgrade, however if someone can guarantee sponsorship i'll package 3.2.7

Jackson, have you tested 3.3.1 under other desktop environments? I've tried under lxde and under Unity, and it does not integrate very well and perhaps is missing some functionality.

Including a stable version of gThumb (i.e. the 3.2 series) in Trusty would make a lot of sense, considering it's an LTS release focused on stability. There are definitely a lot of bugs in the 3.3 series, from minor to fairly major (e.g. the image rendering speed being very slow compared to the 3.2 series, see: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=726087).

The 3.3 series might look nice on GNOME, but in no other DE, including Unity (which is of course Ubuntu's default). It seems that you can't even access the preferences menu in a non-GNOME DE.

Sorry I can't sponsor; bug filing hits the limit of this medieval history grad student's computer skills. -_-;
